Original Batmobile from TV series to be auctioned

(AP) ? Batman's ride is up for sale ? just the thing for cruising on those Dark Knights.

The original Batmobile from the 1960s TV series will be auctioned on Jan. 19 at the Barrett-Jackson auction house in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The 19-foot-long black, bubble-topped car was used in the TV show that starred Adam West as the Caped Crusader.

The car's owner ? famed auto customizer George Barris, of Los Angeles ? transformed a one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car into a sleek crime-fighting machine. On the show, it boasted lasers and a Batphone and could lay down smoke screens and oil slicks.

And just like Batman, the Batmobile has its secrets. The auction house won't say how much it hopes to get for the car.

NYPD officer photographed giving boots to barefoot homeless man

A New York City police officer is photographed giving boots to a homeless man on Nov. 14. (NYPD/Facebook)

A photo of a New York City police officer kneeling down to give a barefoot homeless man in Times Square a pair of boots on a cold November night is melting even the iciest New Yorkers' hearts online.

On Nov. 14, NYPD officer Lawrence DePrimo, who was on counterterrorism duty in Times Square, saw the older homeless man without shoes sitting on 42nd Street. DePrimo, 25, left and then returned with a pair of $100 boots he bought at a nearby Skechers store.

"It was freezing out, and you could see the blisters on the man's feet," DePrimo, a three-year veteran of the department who lives with his parents on Long Island, told the New York Times. "I had two pairs of socks, and I was still cold."

The random act of kindness was captured by Jennifer Foster, a tourist from Florence, Ariz., who was visiting the city. Foster, communications director for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in Arizona, emailed the photo to the NYPD with a note commending DePrimo.

"The officer said, 'I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let's put them on and take care of you,'" Foster wrote. "The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man.

"I have been in law enforcement for 17 years," she continued. "I was never so impressed in my life. ... It is important, I think, for all of us to remember the real reason we are in this line of work. The reminder this officer gave to our profession in his presentation of human kindness has not been lost."

Foster's photo was posted on the NYPD's Facebook page on Tuesday, where it received more than 320,000 "likes," 77,000 "shares" and 20,000 comments?most of them praising DePrimo, who seems to have restored Facebook's faith in humanity.

"This is one hell of a police officer," Desiree Wright-Borden wrote.

"Wow," Jack Horton wrote. "It's nice to know there are still good people out there."

"Angels truly do walk on earth!!!" Charlene Hoffman-Pestell wrote.

Some commenters, though, were skeptical, saying the photo could have been staged.

"Clever stunt!" Louis Zehmke wrote. "The hobo is 'parked' at the entrance of a shoe shop."

But Foster claims DePrimo had no idea he was being photographed: "The officer expected NOTHING in return and did not know I was watching."

Lee was a co-writer on the recent animated film "Wreck-It Ralph." She also contributed to the "Frozen" screenplay.

The toon, to be voiced by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, is about an optimist who embarks on an epic journey with a mountain man and his reindeer to stop her sister, a Snow Queen who's put an icy spell on her kingdom.

Lee's other credits include the screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's "The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights," which is being produced by Troika Pictures.

Israelis question too, 'Who wants this war?'

Residents of southern Israel only reluctantly express support for a potential expansion of the conflict in Gaza and express sympathy for the suffering on the other side of the border.

By Christa Case Bryant,?Staff writer / November 18, 2012

An Israeli woman takes cover as a siren sounds warning of incoming rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, in the southern town of Ofakim November 18. Many Israeli residents only reluctantly express support for the expansion of the conflict.

Ashdod and Kiryat Malachi, Israel

Just days after Adi Pito married a woman from the town of Kiryat Malachi, he heard that a rocket from Gaza had struck an apartment building there, killing three residents.

?I was worried about my wife,? says Mr. Pito, who was in a nearby city at the time. ?If you ask me, I think we have to destroy Gaza. I think they are animals, not people,? he says, pulling at his new wedding ring as he stood outside the damaged apartment yesterday. ?It?s the right thing to do.?

But in towns across southern Israel that have been hit by rockets, other residents only reluctantly express support for a potential expansion of Israel?s Pillar of Defense operation and express sympathy for the suffering on the other side of the border, where at least 53 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured since the operation began five days ago.

?When people say, ?Let?s kill them,? I don?t think they really mean to do it,? says Yehudit Bar Hay, a trauma expert at the Israel Center for Victims of Terror and War, known as NATAL. ?It is an angry feeling but ? we don?t want to kill the people of Gaza. We see the mothers and the children, we are sorry for them.?

Even those who are ?very, very injured? from the trauma of living under rocket fire say they don?t want to hurt anybody, adds Ms. Bar Hay, who lives less than a mile from the Gaza border.?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today that Israel?s military ?is prepared for a significant expansion of its operations,? even as at least 16,000 reservists have been called up for a potential ground invasion. The Defense Ministry has authorized the calling up of as many as 75,000 reservists ? more than six times as many as participated in the 2008-09 Gaza war.

But while some Israelis say war is necessary or inevitable, few are happy about it.?

?Who wants this war? Nobody in Israel,? says Ashdod resident Bebert Avitan, his pink-rimmed glasses hanging from his neck.

Part of the reason for a lack of public pressure may be the effectiveness of Israel?s Iron Dome system, which has kept casualties very low despite a barrage of rockets from Gaza. See today's Monitor story on the Iron Dome system.?

?Hamas apparently has much greater capability than it had in the last war on Gaza,? says Galia Golan, a political scientist at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, but notes that there hasn?t been a parallel uptick in Israeli casualties. ?Because Iron Dome has been relatively successful, there has been less pressure on the government or within the government to launch a ground attack.?

Only three Israelis, all from one building in Kiryat Malachi, have been killed in the recent escalation.

As the evening news shows a picture of a bombed out building, lifelong resident Masodi Sugaker says, ?It?s so sad to see this. To [have to] make everything new after this? Why? Because of Hamas.?

?Hamas exploits their own people, the Palestinians,? says she adds.

Her sister, Hanna Shukrun, adds, ?We don?t want [war],? because there are kids [in Gaza].

But she says, ?Israel can?t just sit here and do nothing?. Our army doesn?t need to wait until they have many weapons.?

(This story was edited after posting to correct the name of Galia Golan from IDC Herzliya. We apologize for the error).

Sandy cost New York $32 billion

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Top political leaders in New York put their heads together Monday on big requests for federal disaster aid as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that Superstorm Sandy ran up a bill of $32 billion in the state and the nation's largest city.

The cost is for repairs and restoration and does not include an additional accounting of over $9 billion to head off damage in the next disastrous storm, including steps to protect the power grid and cellphone network.

"It's common sense; it's intelligent," Cuomo said. "Why don't you spend some money now to save money in the future? And that's what prevention and mitigation is."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg had announced earlier in the day that Sandy caused $19 billion in losses in New York City ? part of the $32 billion estimate Cuomo used.

New York taxpayers, Cuomo said, can't foot the bill.

"It would incapacitate the state. ... Tax increases are always a last, last, last resort."

Cuomo met with New York's congressional delegation to discuss the new figures and present "less than a wish list." The delegation, Cuomo and Bloomberg will now draw up a request for federal disaster aid.

States typically get 75 percent reimbursement for the cost of governments to restore mass transit and other services after a disaster.

The most basic recovery costs for roads, water systems, schools, parks, individual assistance and more total $15 billion in New York City; $7 billion for state agencies; $6.6 billion in Nassau County and $1.7 billion in Suffolk County, both on suburban Long Island; and $527 million in Westchester County and $143 million in Rockland County, both north of New York City, according to a state document used in the private briefing of the delegation and obtained by The Associated Press.

Hard times were already facing the state and city governments that were staring at deficits of more than $1 billion before Sandy hit in late October. State tax receipts have also missed projections, showing a continued slow recovery from a recession that could hit taxpayers in the governments' budgets this spring. And there's the looming fiscal cliff, the combination of expiring federal tax cuts and major spending cuts that could rattle the economy.

"Make no mistake, this will not be an easy task, particularly given the impending fiscal cliff, and a Congress that has been much less friendly to disaster relief than in the past," Schumer said. "We will work with the (Obama) administration on supplemental legislation, to be introduced in the upcoming December session of Congress, that will set us on the road to meeting New York's needs. This will be an effort that lasts not weeks, but many months, and we will not rest until the federal response meets New York's deep and extensive needs."

Rep. Peter King, a Long Island Republican who, like Schumer, is a powerful member of his chamber, said he is seeking cooperation from House leaders to find enough disaster aid.

"It really is survival," King said. "This is an emergency. This should be separate of all the debate about the fiscal cliff and everything else."

The Cuomo administration has gained the public support of President Barack Obama and FEMA in New York's proposal for full reimbursement for storm damage, but state officials have privately worried about how much the state can get now.

In the city, Bloomberg is asking federal lawmakers to put up nearly $10 billion to reimburse government agencies and private businesses. That would be additional funding on an expedited basis over the $5.4 billion in standard disaster aid that the city projects it will receive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

That FEMA money and private insurance won't cover all the public and private expenses from the storm, which included damaged streets and restaurants closed because of flooding, Bloomberg said.

"While the impact of the storm will be felt for some time and the challenges are great, I am confident that the city will rebound and emerge stronger than ever," Bloomberg wrote to the congressional delegation.

Reinsurance company Swiss Re showed the extent of private sector pain. It estimates that claims stemming from Sandy will cost the company about $900 million and that total losses from insured damage will be between $20 billion and $25 billion.

Reinsurance firms provide coverage to insurance companies for great losses stemming from events like natural disasters.

Other states are seeking federal assistance, too. FEMA has already paid out nearly $250 million in New Jersey, where Gov. Chris Christie says the preliminary damage estimate is $29.4 billion and could rise.

HBT: 7 teams interested in free agent Victorino

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that free agent outfielder Shane Victorino is drawing interest from at least seven teams, including the Reds, Indians, Yankees, Rangers, Giants, Rays and Red Sox. While that?s one less than was reported by Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald earlier this month, that?s a pretty healthy market.

Victorino is coming off his worst season in the big leagues, but Heyman hears that several teams are willing to offer him at least three years. That?s what happens when you have extensive experience in center field and represent a cheaper alternative to the likes of Michael Bourn and B.J. Upton. Of course, Victorino wouldn?t be a center fielder for all seven teams listed above, but he has expressed a willingness to play a corner outfield spot if the price is right.

Victorino, who turns 32 on Friday, batted .255/.321/.383 with 11 home runs, 55 RBI and a .704 OPS this past season between the Phillies and Dodgers. He was an excellent 39-for-45 in stolen base attempts.

(AP) ? Facebook's stock is climbing after an upgrade from an analyst who believes Wall Street is underestimating the company's potential to grow revenue.

Bernstein Research analyst Carlos Kirjner said Monday that Facebook Inc. is likely to beat Wall Street's revenue expectations over the next 12 to 24 months. He expects Facebook to hit $6.98 billion in revenue in 2013, some 9 percent higher than the average analyst's expectation. In 2011, the social network reported revenue of $3.71 billion.

Kirjner upgraded Facebook's stock to "Outperform" from "Market Perform," saying that mobile advertising will drive revenue growth. He wrote in a note to investors that Facebook will likely be able to increase the number of advertisements its users view each day, with little chance they will see the additional ads as a "material deterioration" of their Facebook experience.

That said, Kirjner still thinks Facebook is a risky investment, because it depends on the long-term success of social advertising ? a still new and unproven advertising model.

Facebook's stock is up $1.85, or 7.7 percent, at $25.85. It's still down 32 percent from its initial public offering price of $38.

LOVEMAKING?
A Delicate?Romance

By

VIKRAM KARVE

From my Creative Writing Archives:?

Short Fiction - A Love Story

A Mushy Romance I wrote many years ago. I think I wrote this almost 25 years ago during my Vizag days after a visit to the weekly Sunday Market.?

This is probably one of my first attempts at creative writing.?

Do tell me if you liked the story.

I love making love on a Sunday morning.?

I make love to a beautiful woman on Sunday morning ? yes, I make love to her with my eyes.

Here is how we make love.

Tell me, what does a beautiful woman do when a handsome young man looks at her in an insistent, lingering sort of way, which is worth a hundred compliments??

I?ll tell you what she does.

First, she realizes I am looking at her.

Then, she accepts being looked at.

Finally, she begins to look at me in return.

??

Suddenly her eyes become hard and she grills me with a stern stare that makes me uncomfortable.

????

Scared and discomfited, I quickly avert my eyes and try to disappear into the crowd.

I feel ashamed of having eyed her so blatantly.

?What will she think of me???I wonder.?

But soon, by instinct and almost against my will, my eyes begin searching, trying to find her again.

Ah, there she is. She stands at the fruit-stall, buying fruit.

She is an exquisite beauty ? tall, fair and freshly bathed, her luxuriant black hair flows down her back, her sharp features accentuated by the morning sun, her nose slightly turned up, so slender and transparent, as though accustomed to smelling nothing but perfumes.

I am mesmerized.

Never before had anyone evoked such a delightful tremor of thrilling sensation in me.

An unknown force propels me towards the fruit-stall. I stand near her and made?pretense?of choosing a papaya, trying to look at her with sidelong glances when I think she isn?t noticing.

She notices.

She looks at me.

Her eyes are extremely beautiful ? enormous, dark, expressive.

Suddenly her eyes began to dance, and seeing the genuine admiration in my eyes, she gives me smile so captivating that I experience a delightful twinge in my heart.

She selects a papaya and extends her hands to give it to me.

Our fingers touch.

The feeling is electric. It is sheer ecstasy. I feel so good that I wish time would stand still.

I can?t begin to describe the sensation I feel deep within me.

I try to smile.

She communicates an unspoken good-bye with her eyes and briskly walks away.

Three months have passed. She has never misses her Sunday morning love date with me, same time, same place, every Sunday ? at precisely Seven o?clock in the morning.

But, my dear Reader, do you know that not a word has been exchanged between us.

We just make love every Sunday morning using the language of our eyes and part with an unspoken good-bye.

Once I was slightly late for our rendezvous.

I could see her eyes desperately searching for me.

And when her eyes found me, her eyes danced with delight, and her eyes began making love to my eyes.

Tell me, is there any way of making love that can surpass our fascinating alluring lovemaking?

It feels like the supreme bliss of non-alcoholic intoxication.

Should I speak to her?

I do not know.

Why doesn?t she speak to me?

I do not know.

Does one have to speak to express love??

Are words from the mouth the only way to communicate love?

Maybe we both want our beautiful romance to remain this way.

Our silent lovemaking with our eyes ? so lovely, so esoteric, so exquisite, so pristine, so divine, so fragile, so delicate, so sensitive, so delicately poised.

Just one word would spoil everything.

Yes, just one word may destroy our enthralling state of?trance-like?bliss and bring everything crashing down from supreme ecstasy to harsh ground reality.

I think it?s best to let our exquisite silent Sunday morning love making go on for ever and ever, till eternity.

What do you feel, Dear Reader?

How long should we go making silent love like this?

Tell me, should I make a move, talk to her, break the spell...?

Tell me, My Dear Reader: Should I speak to her...?

I?ll do exactly as you say.

Till then, I will make love to the beautiful woman every Sunday morning ? yes, I?ll make love to her only with my eyes.?

MontReal Estate: One More Post on Real Estate and Violent Death

A response to my two previous posts on real estate and violent deaths from thoughtful reader Kristian Gravenor:

Nice post, good topic, but I think you're greatly overestimating the issue.

People die in every pre-owned house in a lot of ways. It has no bearing on what happens when you live there.

In the USA there's a hodgepodge of laws from state to state concerning disclosure but I've never found a case in the jugements.qc.ca files of a lawsuit asking for material damages from such a failure to disclose in Kweebeck.

Unless there was a Jim Jones-type body count inside the house I wouldn't be bothered a tiny bit by what happened before.

Yes, but there's a difference between people dying in houses and people dying violently in houses. I learned this lesson first hand a few years ago when I was given the responsibility of selling a home in which the owner had just taken his own life. In this case, the death was not violent, as these things go, but it was an unnatural death. The police and an ambulance were involved. All the neighbors knew what had happened. That raised the potential for neighborhood gossp and conjecture.

It was an interesting experience. The house was fully furnished but quite empty. People had what can only be described as "spidey senses". You could see them trying to put the story of this house together as they walked through. They knew something was a bit off about it.

If I sensed that there was an interest in making an offer, I would sit down and explain the situation. It was amazing the number of times people told me intimate stories of their own experiences with suicide - friends, family members, their struggles with dark thoughts. These are not the kinds of stories you tell complete strangers. Or maybe they are.

The first people who wanted to make an offer on the house were a Vietnamese family, elderly parents, young professional kids. As soon as they heard about the suicide, they said sorry, no thanks. Here's the thing, and it speaks to the point you raise, Kristian. They would not have been bothered by a death in the house. Had an old person died quietly in the house after a long, good life, that would have been auspicious. A violent death was not negotiable.

It took a while, but I sold the house to a family from Iran. The woman with whom I was negotiating had a cousin who took her own life in her early 20s. She had thought long and hard about what makes people kill themselves. Her only question before buying the house was whether kids in the local school yard were going to pick on her son or refuse to play at their house because of that event. I told her I didn't think they would. She bought a good house in a good neighborhood at a good price.

As for whether people go to court over the failure to disclose, you may be right, though I wonder how you would even check such a thing. The other option is that the parties settle out of court most times because if there's been a violent death and the broker hasn't disclosed, the buyer would win, hands down.

So there, you go, Kristian. Thanks for writing. You keep me on my toes.

Internet Market For The Savvy Business Owner - KurtTasche.com ...

Internet Market For The Savvy Business Owner

For businesses promoting their services or products, Affiliate marketing becomes useful, also, it can replace traditional advertising and other methods like television or print. Use these tips if you would like to perform Website marketing with your business.

If you know what kind of lingo people use when talking about the brand you are selling you can use it in your ads. Using terms that your customers are already comfortable with will allow you to reach them on a more familiar level. Your target market will readily identify with your message when you use the correct terminology in your writings.

Make sure you have the money to buy a good domain URL. Chances are, you are not going to find a domain name that is the exact name of your company. But, if you are willing to spend between $1,000 to $2,000, you will likely get one close enough.

Strategic placement of ads is the cornerstone of Website marketing. Companies such as Google?s AdSense make this easy. These companies offer a lot of marketing for your advertising dollar.

Emailing clients is a very important part in any Internet marketing endeavor. You need to ensure that your mail stays safe. Don?t use free email services that lack functions that you need, such as the ability to store mail indefinitely. If you have sensitive information contained in your emails, consider security and archiving methods to keep them safe.

Marketing online is like other markets in some ways; however, in other ways, it is very different. Be ready for any changes that may come up, like if search engines stop putting focus on title tags. When that happens, you need to be ready to switch gears, like putting an increased effort behind video marketing.

Don?t just abandon and reject ideas that did not produce the results that you wanted. Your idea that failed to catch on in the past, may work now. The Internet evolves daily. Don?t sink extra time and money into ideas that aren?t working, but hang onto them in case they become viable down the road.

Make your advertisements descriptive, and make sure to entice readers with promises of quick results. Play up the speed of the process; how quickly the order is processed, how little time shipping takes, or how quickly your product will give them the results they want. This means improving download speed, having very fast checkouts, or quickly confirming orders.

Here is some great web marketing advice! Be very clear with your customers that their information is completely safe with you. You can do this by placing a privacy policy on the top right part of the page. Doing this will reassure your customers that the money they spend will be handled with care. In addition, their identities are safe when buying from your website.

Another option is putting it together with a product that is similar and selling it for a good price. Make sure that the terms are stated clearly in all of your marketing literature.

You can assess the results of online marketing campaigns with sophisticated programs that measure the sales versus the number of visitors to your site. Many of the bigger online companies have tracking meters available that will show you the precise number of visitors in comparison with buyers and repeat visitors.
These web analysis products are designed to suit a number of uses and easily integrate with you sites per-existing software.

To sum things up, Internet marketing can be a valuable business tool. Internet promotion can be utilized to advertise your services and products instead of traditional TV or print ads. Using the information and suggestions in this article can help you utilize the Internet to further your business.

12 Depression Busters for Caregivers | World of Psychology

12 Depression Busters for CaregiversNearly one-third of people caring for terminally ill loved ones suffer from depression according to research from Yale University. About one in four family caregivers meet the clinical criteria of anxiety. And a recent study found that 41 percent of former caregivers of a spouse with Alzheimer?s disease or another form of dementia experienced mild to severe depression up to three years after their spouse had died.

Caregivers are so vulnerable to depression because they often sacrifice their own needs while tending to their loved one and because of the constant stress involved.

So here are 12 tips to help protect you from anxiety and depression and to guide you toward good mental health as you care for a relative.

1. Acknowledge it.

If you haven?t already, say this out loud: ?This sucks.? Call a spade a spade. Granted, you don?t want to ruminate on negative thoughts for too long. But suppressing your emotions ? forcing that positive cap on each and every thought ? can actually do more harm than good. For example, a recent study in the journal ?Psychological Science? reported that people with low self-esteem who told themselves positive statements (?I?m good enough, I?m smart enough, Gosh darn it, people like me!?) actually ended up grumpier and with less self-esteem than before they started. What does this mean? Sometimes the best thing that we can do for our mental health is to be honest. And if you?re a caretaker, that means acknowledging that your situation, well, simply sucks.

2. Educate yourself.

Relieve some of your stress by reading up on your loved one?s condition. I say that because if you?re like me, you?re probably scared. You don?t know what?s coming down the pike. You detest surprises, and ever since your loved one fell ill, your life has been full of these shockers.

There?s no way of eliminating all the surprises, of course, but if you understand the illness(es) of the person you?re nursing, then you can better predict his behavior, and can prepare yourself for what may happen in a month or in a year. You might also consider attending a caregiver training program. A recent study showed significant improvement in the quality of life of caregivers who received training. Finally, two books I recommend are ?The Caregiver Handbook: Powerful Tools for Caregiving? and ?Caregiving: The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss, and Renewal.?

3. Grab your own oxygen mask.

It always goes back to the ten-second spiel you get right before your plane takes off (or crashes). ?In the event of an emergency, an oxygen mask will drop from the compartment above you. Please fasten your own mask before assisting others.? Or, on Southwest airlines, they say, ?Now would be a good time to choose your favorite kid.?

Taking caring of your own needs is really as important as grabbing your oxygen mask first because you?ll be running out of breath early in the inning if you hold off on breathing until everyone is well. A study published in the ?Journal of the American Medical Association? found that stressed-out older caretakers tending to a sick spouse had a 63 percent risk of death compared to the non-stressed-out caregivers or to lucky folks who don?t have to fetch anyone a glass of water all day long.

4. Schedule a break.

Give yourself a break every day. That DOES NOT mean that you go about your day and grab whatever free 15 minutes you can get ?before the meatloaf is done or the jello is solid ? at which time you sit down to read some depressing headlines in the paper, hoping for no interruptions. That DOES mean scheduling one half-hour every day at the same time of day that you can, guilt-free, put out your ?Off Duty? sign, and during that break no one is allowed to bother you with requests. By taking the same half-hour every day, you have a better shot at convincing your ill loved one that you really are serious about needing some time to yourself.

5. Label your guilt.

I?m not going to tell you to get rid of your guilt. Get real, I?m Catholic! But I am going to advise you to label your guilt as helpful or unhelpful, because I bet you think you?re supposed to own all of it. The negative intrusive thoughts that tell you that you are a loser for not doing more for your loved one? Bye-bye. The voice that says you could be managing all of this mayhem a tad more effectively? Try to tease out some specific suggestions. They might help you come up with ways to better delegate responsibilities or to clean up messes without using so many cuss words.

6. Get organized.

If caregiving is anything like parenting ? and I think it is, except for the fact that kids eventually grow up (a truth that I cling to in moments of desperation) ? a small bit of organization can go a long way.

My June Cleaver role became a tad easier when I implemented some simple household rules like: no TV before 5 pm, one treat a day, no snacks after dinner, and so on. I initially resisted this kind of structure?it?s so not my style?but I have found that it really does facilitate managing kids (and I?ll add in sick ones) ? because they both want things all the time, and that can become very wearisome. If my kids know they can?t watch SpongeBob SquarePants before 5 pm ? and I follow up consistently on that rule (the hard part) ? then they will eventually stop asking. The same goes with a sick mother or wife: if she knows dinner is at 6 every evening, and that Wednesday is pizza day, then you?ve just given her one less thing to whine about. Theoretically, of course.

Wreck victims on family's first Thanksgiving apart

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) ? The children of a Houston-area couple killed during Thursday's massive interstate wreck in Texas say this year was the family's first Thanksgiving apart.

Authorities are investigating the chain-reaction wreck that involved more than 100 vehicles, many of which were left twisted on top of each other. The wreck killed the couple and injured at least 80 other people during heavy fog along Interstate 10 near Beaumont.

Vincent and Debbie Leggio were on their way to Louisiana for a gambling trip when their vehicle was caught in the wreck, sons V.J. and Richard Leggio told KHOU-TV.

"My parents are wonderful loving people ? all who knew them knew that," V.J. Leggio told the station. "They will be sorely missed ? sorely missed."

He said he worked with his father at the family business, Vinco Electric in Pearland, the Houston suburb where his parents lived.

"We had a good relationship," he added. "We got to spend time together golfing and fishing, and I'm so thankful for that now."

Hospitals have released most others injured in the crash, though 12 people were reported in serious condition Thursday night. Phone messages left Friday for law enforcement officials weren't returned.

The wreck occurred southwest of Beaumont, on Texas' Gulf Coast. The heavy fog made it hard for law enforcement to determine at first how many wrecks had occurred.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a crash on the eastbound side of the highway led to other accidents in a dangerous chain reaction. There were multiple crashes on the other side of the highway as well.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Chuck Havard told KFDM-TV on Friday that investigators will work to determine whether any drivers will face charges.

Nexus 4 shown working on Canadian LTE through simple carrier menu code video

Want LTE on your new Nexus 4? Well, you might have to move to another country. Unless it's some elaborate post-Thanksgiving hoax from our Canadian neighbors, several Telus customers have demonstrated that the LTE chip hiding inside the Nexus 4 does work, and have connected to some data speeds resembling a 4G connection. This was enabled through the test menu, accessed by dialing *#*4636#*#*.

Tapping on the preferred network type option, you can select either LTE on its own, or a mix of LTE, GSM and CDMA. According to the videos, the Google phone then taps into your carrier's LTE network if Band 4 is available, and you're good to go. We've so far been unable to replicate it in the UK, which doesn't use the same LTE Band 4 (AWS 2100 / 1700MHz) of Canadian carriers Bell, Rogers and Telus. We have also tested this with AT&T's LTE, but had no luck there either -- we tried it in a Band 17 area, not a Band 4 area (which is less common). This is, however, great news for T-Mobile customers as this is precisely the type of LTE they'll be getting very soon. But for now, there's two working videos already doing the rounds from Canada and we've included them both below.

[Thanks Kaung]

Update: There was a typo in the code required to activate the test menu. We've updated with the correct key combination.

(AP Photo/Jim Suhr, File)

(AP) ? The Army Corps of Engineers on Friday began reducing the flow from a Missouri River reservoir, a move expected to worsen low-water conditions on the Mississippi River and potentially bring barge traffic to a halt within weeks.

The Missouri flows into the Mississippi around a bend just north of St. Louis. One result of this year's drought, the worst in decades, has been a big drop in water levels on both rivers.

The corps announced earlier this month that it would reduce the outflow from the Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, S.D., to protect the upper Missouri River basin. That drew an outcry from political leaders and businesses downstream, who warned that allowing the Mississippi to drop more could have devastating economic consequences.

Corps spokeswoman Monique Farmer told The Associated Press on Friday that the reduction began as scheduled that morning. By midday, the flow that had started at 37,500 cubic feet per second had been cut to 35,500 cubic feet per second.

Farmer said plans call for a gradual reduction down to 12,000 cubic feet per second by Dec. 11 because of the drought.

"We're hoping Mother Nature brings some snow this winter," she said, "but we've been told to expect low, stable conditions, that it's probably going to remain dry."

The cut in flow comes despite opposition from the governors of Missouri and Illinois and 77 members of Congress whose states sit along the Mississippi River. Scott Holste, a spokesman for Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, said his office never received a reply to a letter Nixon sent Army Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy, asking that the corps delay plans to reduce the Missouri River flow.

The Mississippi is nearing historic lows between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill. Barges are already required to carry lighter loads and the middle of the river could be closed to barge traffic if the water level at St. Louis dips below minus 5 feet. It was at minus 0.45 feet Friday.

A zero river reading at St. Louis was established more than a century ago. It's the point at which people at that time thought the river would never drop below.

The National Weather Service forecast for river levels extends only as far as Dec. 6. It calls for the Mississippi River to get to minus 3.7 feet at St. Louis by then. Businesses that ship on the river and their trade groups expect to get to minus 5 feet by around Dec. 10.

Barges carry 20 percent of the country's coal and more than 60 percent of its grain exports. Other cargo, including petroleum products, lumber, sand, industrial chemicals and fertilizer, also gets shipped along the Mississippi River.

Barge operators and those who ship on the Mississippi have warned that a shutdown would have disastrous economic consequences on those industries, with companies laying off workers if it lasts for any significant amount of time.

River shipping trade groups have even asked President Barack Obama to intervene.

"This is a pending economic emergency," said Ann McCulloch, director of public affairs for the American Waterways Operators.

A message left with the White House on Friday was not returned.

The weather forecast offers little hope with no big storms in sight.

While the drought has eased in the St. Louis area, it persists in the upper Mississippi and upper Missouri river basins, which feed water to the areas below, said Scott Truett, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in St. Louis.

"That means less runoff and hence low water levels," Truett said.

The corps has taken steps to keep the Mississippi open as long as possible, including increasing dredging. It also plans to remove two rock formations in the river in southern Illinois that jut up, potentially scraping the bottoms of barges when water levels are low.

But that work isn't expected until February, although 15 senators and 62 House members in separate letters asked for the rock removal to be expedited.

Corps officials in Omaha say the drought already has hurt recreation along the upper Missouri River areas. The low water has exposed Native American artifacts, leaving them prone to looting, and if it persists into spring, hydropower could be impacted.

Corps officials in Omaha say they are bound by the Missouri River Master Manual to act in the best interest of the Missouri River basin and what happens on the Mississippi is incidental.

(AP) ? Justin Forsett scooted up the middle and lunged forward while a couple of Detroit defenders closed in to stop him. His knee hit the ground, but the Houston running back hopped up quickly and took off toward the end zone.

"I know now that I was down, but I didn't think I was during the play," Forsett said. "I didn't think my knee hit, and there was no whistle, so I kept going."

Forsett had nothing to lose by getting up and running ? and unbelievably, the 81-yard scoring play stood. The officials missed the call, giving the Texans a touchdown, and Detroit coach Jim Schwartz inadvertently wiped out any chance of a replay review by throwing his challenge flag when he wasn't allowed to.

That was all Houston needed to start a second-half comeback, and the Texans went on to beat the Lions 34-31 in overtime Thursday.

"Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good," running back Arian Foster said.

AFC South-leading Houston (10-1) has won five straight ? two in a row in OT ? and if a handful of teams lose, the Texans could be in the playoffs by the end of this weekend.

The Lions led 24-14 in the third quarter when Forsett scored on his long run. Replays clearly showed Forsett's knee touching the ground around his own 25 ? Detroit players even slowed up, assuming the play was over.

Forsett got up and ran all the way to the end zone.

Scoring plays are reviewed automatically ? but if a coach throws a challenge flag like Schwartz did, the review is negated and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty is assessed. So the touchdown stood despite obvious evidence it shouldn't have.

Detroit (4-7) still led 24-21 after Forsett's touchdown, and the Lions went up 31-24 on Joique Bell's 23-yard TD run with 13:31 left in the fourth.

Houston rallied, tying it at 31 on Foster's 1-yard run with 1:55 to play. That touchdown capped a 15-play, 97-yard drive that included a conversion on fourth-and-7.

"Had our opportunities to win it multiple times. Both teams did," Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "It was a great football game. Didn't catch many breaks and couldn't capitalize on a couple we needed to."

Texans kicker Shayne Graham missed from 51 yards in overtime, and Detroit's Jason Hanson hit the right upright from 47. Graham finally connected from 32 to win it.

Detroit extended its losing streak in its annual Thanksgiving showcase to nine.

Hanson's miss came on third down after the Lions had lost 3 yards on a second-down run. The Lions sent the veteran kicker onto the field instead of trying to move the ball a bit closer.

"We didn't want to give up a negative play, and they'd been trying really hard to strip the ball, so we didn't want to risk a turnover," Schwartz said.

The Lions were hoping a three-game homestand would help revive their playoff hopes, but they lost against Green Bay last weekend and couldn't hold on against the Texans.

If the Lions didn't have enough problems, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh could be in trouble with the league again after his left cleat connected with Houston quarterback Matt Schaub's groin area in the first quarter.

"I really don't have anything to say about that play or that person," Schaub said.

Suh was on his chest, taken down by an offensive lineman, when he extended his left foot below Schaub's belt.

It wasn't clear on replays whether the kick was intentional. Suh didn't stick around talk to reporters after the game.

Last year on Thanksgiving, Suh was ejected for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith and was suspended for two games. He has been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks: Cincinnati's Andy Dalton, Chicago's Jay Cutler and Cleveland's Jake Delhomme.

Schaub stayed in the game, and was 29 of 48 for 315 yards with a 9-yard TD to Owen Daniels that tied it at 14 late in the first half. He also threw an interception.

Houston's Andre Johnson had nine receptions for 188 yards.

Stafford was 31 of 61 for 441 yards with two TDs ? tiebreaking scores to Calvin Johnson and Mike Thomas in the second quarter. It wasn't enough.

"We got what we deserved," Stafford said. "We didn't capitalize on our chances."

NOTES: Lions OT Jeff Backus (right hamstring) was inactive, ending his 186-game starting streak. ... Houston LB Brooks Reed (left groin) and OT Derek Newton (knee) were injured during the game.
