Video: Researchers use liquid metal to create wires that stretch 8 times their original length

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Researchers from North Carolina State University have created conductive wires that can be stretched up to eight times their original length while still functioning. The wires can be used for everything from headphones to phone chargers, and hold potential for use in electronic textiles.

To make the wires, researchers start with a thin tube made of an extremely elastic polymer and then fill the tube with a liquid metal alloy of gallium and indium, which is an efficient conductor of electricity.

"Previous efforts to create stretchable wires focus on embedding metals or other electrical conductors in elastic polymers, but that creates a trade-off," says Dr. Michael Dickey, an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper on the research.

"Increasing the amount of metal improves the conductivity of the composite, but diminishes its elasticity," Dickey says. "Our approach keeps the materials separate, so you have maximum conductivity without impairing elasticity. In short, our wires are orders of magnitude more stretchable than the most conductive wires, and at least an order of magnitude more conductive than the most stretchable wires currently in the literature."

While the manufacturing of the new wires is relatively straightforward, Dickey notes that one challenge needs to be addressed before the wires can be considered for popular products: how to minimize leakage of the metal if the wires are severed.

Asian countries own 40 percent of US foreign-held debt

Just over 40 percent of foreign-held U.S. debt is now owned by Asian countries, the Treasury Department announced Monday.

China owns the largest portion, $1.16 trillion, ahead of Japan?s $1.13 trillion of U.S. Treasury securities. Total debt held by foreign countries reached the record high of $5.48 trillion.

Foreign countries continuing to buy U.S. treasury debt is a perceived sign of confidence in the securities market, despite the sputtering negotiations for the end of the year budget and fiscal compromise known as the fiscal cliff. U.S. treasury securities are considered to be among the safest places for investors to put money in the world.

Liberal economist Paul Krugman has suggested that so long as foreign nations have confidence in and continue to buy U.S. debt, considered to be the safest asset one can buy, the U.S. can and should engage in deficit spending to stimulate the weak economy.

How long foreign investors continue to buy U.S. debt with such confidence, however, remains uncertain. Should it start to appear less likely that investments will be repaid, interest rates for the U.S. will soar.

The current debt ceiling of?$16.39 trillion is expected to be reached sometime early next year.

Should the debt ceiling not be raised in early 2013, the Congress will potentially face the first-ever debt default.

Standard & Poor?s downgraded the government?s credit rating from the highest level of AAA to AA+ following the previous debt standoff in 2011.

?Last month, Fitch Ratings said Obama will need to quickly reach a budget agreement with Congress over the ?fiscal cliff? or risk losing Fitch?s AAA rating on U.S. debt,? The Associated Press reported.

Philanthropy Daily? ? Dennis: For nonprofits' health, lower tax rates ...

Home ? Uncategorized Jeremy Beer

General economic prosperity is a more important driver of nonprofits? financial health than is the charitable deduction. That is the conclusion Kimberly Dennis, the president and CEO of the Searle Freedom Trust, reaches in today?s Wall Street Journal. The article?s accompanying graphic, which I?ve pasted below, shows a surprisingly direct and consistent relationship between the top marginal tax rate and charitable donations since 1980.

Of course, that graphic also tells a more general story about America?s rising prosperity during those same years. Dennis says that there is a direct relation between the top marginal rate and economic growth. That?s surely true, although I?m not sure that in terms of economic growth allowing the top rate go go to 39.6% would be a total catastrophe ? at least, not more of a catastrophe than the one represented by our knee-buckling national debt. But that?s a different argument. In any case, nonprofits and their lobbyists ? or, more importantly, their funders ? would do well to consider Dennis?s argument with care.

Richard Engel, NBC News team freed from captors in Syria

After being held captive for five days in Syria, NBC's Richard Engel and his team recount being ambushed, blindfolded and traumatized before being freed at a checkpoint.?

By Mike Brunker, NBC News

Updated at 8:15 a.m. ET: NBC News? Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and members of his network production team were freed from captors in Syria after a firefight at a checkpoint on Monday, five days after they were taken prisoner, NBC News said early Tuesday.

?After being kidnapped and held for five days inside Syria by an unknown group, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew members have been freed unharmed. We are pleased to report they are safely out of the country,? the network said in a statement.

?It is good to be here,? Engel said during a live appearance on TODAY from Turkey. ?I?m very happy that we?re able to do this live shot this morning.?

Engel said that they were traveling with Syrian rebels when a group of about 15 gunmen ?jumped out of the trees and bushes? and captured them.

'Psychological torture'
He said the gunmen executed one of the rebels ?on the spot,? and later during their captivity they were subjected to mock executions while blindfolded and bound.

"We weren't physically beaten or tortured. It was a lot of psychological torture, threats of being killed," Engel said.

"They made us choose which one of us would be shot first and when we refused there were mock shootings.?They pretended to shoot Ghazi [Balkiz, an NBC producer] several times,? Engel said.

Balkiz said that they had ?worked with each other very well? we kept each other?s spirits up? during their ordeal.?Cameraman John Kooistra said he had ?made good with my maker? and had been ?prepared to die many times.?

Engel said their captors ?were talking openly about their loyalty to the government? of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

He said he had a ?very good idea? about who they were -- members of the ?shabiha? militia, loyal to Assad, trained by the Iran?s Revolutionary Guard and allied with Lebanon-based group Hezbollah.

Engel said their captors? plan was to use them to win the freedom of people held by the rebels.

?They captured us in order to carry out this exchange,? he said.

NBC News file

Richard Engel at the end of a reporting trip in Syria in July of this year.

Engel, 39, and his team disappeared shortly after crossing into northwest Syria from Turkey on Thursday. The network had not been able to contact them until learning that they had been freed on Monday.

The network said there was no claim of responsibility, no contact with the captors and no request for ransom during the time the crew was missing.

After entering Syria, Engel and his team were abducted, tossed into the back of a truck before being transported to an unknown location believed to be near the small town of Ma?arrat Misrin. During their captivity, they were blindfolded and bound, but otherwise not physically harmed, the network said.

Early Monday evening local time, the prisoners were being moved to a new location in a vehicle when their captors ran into a checkpoint manned by members of the Ahrar al-Sham brigade, a Syrian rebel group. There was a confrontation and a firefight ensued.? Two of the captors were killed, while an unknown number of others escaped, the network said.

The NBC News crew was unharmed in the incident. They remained in Syria until Tuesday morning when they made their way to the border and re-entered Turkey, the network said. They were to be evaluated and debriefed, but had communicated that everyone was in good health.

NBC News said it ?expressed its gratitude to those who worked to gather information and secure the release of our colleagues.?

Engel is widely regarded as one of America?s leading foreign correspondents for his coverage of wars, revolutions and political transitions around the world over the last 15 years. Most recently, he was recognized for his outstanding reporting on the 2011 revolution in Egypt, the conflict in Libya and unrest throughout the Arab world.?

One of the only Western journalists to cover the entire war in Iraq , Engel was named chief foreign correspondent of NBC News in April 2008. He joined the network in May 2003.

The Syrian civil war began in March 2011, when demonstrators took to the streets to show support for the so-called Arab Spring uprisings sweeping across the Middle East and north Africa and to demand the resignation of Assad of the ruling Ba?ath Party. The following month, Assad deployed the Syrian army to quell the uprising, ordering troops to open fire on demonstrators. But despite the harsh crackdown, Assad?s troops and militias loyal to the government were unable to quell what soon became an armed uprising.

In the intervening months, the security situation in the country has continued to deteriorate amid increasingly fierce fighting between Syrian troops and a loose confederation of outgunned but increasingly emboldened rebel forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimated in November that more than 40,000 people had died in the fighting.

S. Africa's ANC re-elects Zuma as party president

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (Reuters) - South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) re-elected President Jacob Zuma as leader of the party on Tuesday, teeing him up for another seven years as head of state, and it chose businessman Cyril Ramaphosa as his deputy.

More than 4,000 ANC delegates crammed into a marquee in the central city of Bloemfontein erupted into wild cheers when Zuma was confirmed in the top party post after comfortably seeing off a challenge by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

A beaming Zuma then walked on stage to shake hands with his colleagues and members of the party's election commission.

The rand edged higher against the dollar after the announcement, reflecting relief among investors in Africa's biggest economy at the likelihood of policies remaining largely unchanged under Zuma.

The return to frontline politics of Ramaphosa - an anti-apartheid union leader who his now South Africa's second-richest black businessman - is also seen as broadly favourable to business and investment.

Zuma came to power in 2009 in the teeth of South Africa's first recession in 18 years. His economic record has been chequered and he has also been dogged by personal scandals, but his popularity within Nelson Mandela's 100-year-old liberation movement is overwhelming.

Standard & Poor's hikes Greek rating by 6 notches

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Standard & Poor's ratings agency on Tuesday upgraded Greece's credit grade by 6 notches, yanking the debt-heavy country out of default but still keeping its devalued bonds in junk status.

The agency said the upgrade to B- ? the highest grade it has given Greece since June 2011 ? reflected its view that the other 16 European Union countries using the euro are determined to keep Greece inside the currency union.

It also gave Greece a stable outlook, meaning it is less likely to change its rating again soon.

"The stable outlook balances our view of eurozone member states' determination to support Greece's eurozone membership and the Greek government's commitment to a fiscal and structural adjustment against the economic and political challenges of doing so," the agency said in a statement.

An upgrade was expected since S&P had earlier this month temporarily lowered Greece's rating to the bottom of its scale ? 'selective default' ? because the country was buying back its own debt. The agency said that because the buyback did not force any investors to sell their bonds back ? which would have constituted a default ? it was raising the rating back up.

The bond buyback was successfully completed last week, and will reduce the country's debt by some ?20 billion ($26.4 billion).

The size of the upgrade suggests EU leaders are seeing some results in their effort to bring Greece's debt load back under control.

However, the credit rating is increasingly losing any market relevance because there are very few private sector investors still holding Greek bonds. After completing the buyback and receiving multiple bailout packages over three years, Greece now owes the bulk of its debt to fellow eurozone states, the IMF and the European Central Bank.

Greece's government bonds have been rated as non-investment grade ? or junk ? since 2010, when the country's finances imploded after Athens admitted it had severely underestimated its budget deficit.

For more than two and a half years, the country has depended on billions in rescue loans from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund. To secure the bailouts, Greece has implemented harsh austerity measures that slashed incomes, bled the health and welfare systems and drove thousands into deep poverty.

The cutbacks and repeated tax hikes are meant to reduce the deficit, but they also hurt the economy. Greece has been in a deep recession that has cut economic output by 20 percent over the past five years and brought unemployment to a record high of 26 percent ? with about 1,000 jobs lost every day since 2010.

Greece on Monday received a massive rescue loan installment worth ?34.3 billion, after completing the bond buyback in which it paid ?11.29 billion to cancel debt worth ?31.9 billion.

The government said Tuesday that deficit cutting efforts remained on target, with the January-November shortfall at ?12.9 billion, compared with ?21.5 billion for that period in 2011.

S&P's Greek rating is the highest among the three main agencies. Fitch has Greece rated at one notch above default, while Moody's still lists the country as being in default.

Although Greece is unable to finance itself on long-term bond markets, it maintains a presence in short-term debt markets through regular auctions.

On Tuesday, it raised ?1.3 billion ($1.71 billion) in a treasury bill auction at slightly lower interest rates compared with the last such sale five weeks ago.

The Public Debt Management Agency said the 13-week T-bills were sold at an interest rate of 4.11 percent, edging down from 4.2 percent rate last month.

S&P said that while bailout creditors assume that Athens will be able to return to bond markets by 2015, that access "remains subject to numerous domestic and external uncertainties."

What is life without humor and what can give more smiles to one's face than some funny and very funny jokes. But be careful to avoid laughing at your own career competence, as those around you want to see courage and confidence.

For me, the piano is the symbol of what is stiff, proper and elegant. It doesn't have faults, it is perfect. Pianists are the most perfectionist people in the world. They should not and can not make mistakes especially when performing. That is how I viewed the piano and the pianists. But then, I just found out I was wrong. A few researches and I have once again proven that appearances can be deceiving.

Most often, designer labels might cater to an immense range when it comes to styling range, but fall short while providing for the variety in terms of colours, sizes, and fabrics. However, bancuri noi Clothing scores highly on this parameter too. Right from bold, quirky colours like magenta and purple to pastel shades, Humor has all the possible colour options you might seek. Whether it's informal T-Shirts, cardigans, sweaters, or shirts, you can always get the colour and size of your choice. The range is seemingly never ending.

There was a time when instructions pertaining to safety used to be taught through the medium of books as well as pictures to the affect that the retention of knowledge was limited only to theoretical knowledge. This was replaced by motion picture wherein a video clip graphically demonstrating safety instructions as well as their repercussions on being neglected was more effective in creating awareness. Due to their impact, safety videos began to be made to encompass a wide variety of topics and were made available through the internet as well for easy and widespread accessibility. Hence, all that the viewer was required to do was to click on the relevant topic and then assimilate all the instructions and safety tips enumerated in it.

Unfortunately, movie reviews say that this summer's movies were a disappointment. There was lots of money made ($4.35 billion) but few tickets sold - less than in the past ten years. Increases in ticket prices, particularly because 3D movies hiked up ticket prices, made up for the bigger bottom line. However, there weren't a lot of people who went out to the movies.

Not along ago, about 35 million people got an e-mail containing a picture taken in Disneyland. It took a minute to see it but there was Donald Duck lying prone in front of the famous Cinderella Castle. The title of the picture was "Bird Flu has hit Disneyland". Earth-Friendly Polishes | Home Improvement

Most homeowners enjoy the convenience of using commercially available furniture polishing products that are readily available at the local grocery store and other popular retailers. Though these products spray on easily, do a good job, and also smell nice, they have one huge drawback. These products contain toxic VOC?s associated with the use of aerosol sprays, and these toxins are released into the air, and your home, with every spray. If you are concerned about the effect these products may have on your family and on the environment, there are some simple alternatives you can use to make your furniture polish eco-friendly.

Make Your Own Earth-Friendly Furniture Polish

You can actually make your own version of the lovely lemon scented furniture polish sprays right at home. For this, you will need one lemon, some olive oil, and water. Juice one entire lemon and combine with one teaspoon each of olive oil and water. Mix your ingredients in a spray bottle and you are ready to use.

The lemon will smell just like the aerosol lemon scented cleaners, and lemon is a natural grease cutter which makes it good for cleaning. The olive oil works much like the polish to help condition and shine wooden surfaces. The best part about using these products is not only that they work great, but are also affordable, and completely safe to use in the home, and around children and pets. Because the ingredients in the homemade version of furniture polish are perishable, you should only mix up enough for one round of dusting and polishing. Each time you dust and polish furniture will require you to mix up a new batch. This is a small price to pay for the peace of mind you?ll derive from knowing you are using an Earth-friendly, people-friendly product.

Use Prepared Earth-Friendly Polishes

With the increasing awareness about the importance of being environmentally responsible, there are now product lines of cleaning products available that are Earth- friendly alternatives to their aerosol and chemical counterparts. One such non-toxic furniture polish to try is from the brand called Earth Friendly.

The Earth Friendly furniture polish is made with olive oil and orange oil and will protect as well as clean wood surfaces. This product can be used on such other surfaces as paneling and vinyl. This polish works well for removing dirt, smudges, and fingerprints while bringing out the natural beauty of your furniture?s wood.

Conclusion

Whether you decide to make a homemade version or choose to purchase one of these ready made Earth-Friendly polishes, you can do so with confidence. By using a non-toxic, natural product to clean and beautify your home, you can rest easy knowing that you are not exposing your family or the Earth to any unwelcome or dangerous chemicals or toxins. When using these Earth friendly polishes, you will still get the same cleaning results with no risks to your health or the environment. This is just one small way in which you can go green in your own household.

Performance review of Clint Bowyer in 2012 Sprint Cup Series - Bettor

Performance review of Clint Bowyer in 2012 Sprint Cup Series ? NASCAR Special

2012 was by far the best year in Clint Bowyer?s racing career in NASCAR Sprint Cup. In 2012, Bowyer made a switch from Richard Childress Racing to Michael Waltrip Racing which proved very fruitful for the 33-year-old Kansas racer. He got 3 Sprint Cup victories during the 2012 season out of a total of 8 career victories. Bowyer finished the Sprint Cup Series with a career best of 2nd position.

At 2012 Daytona 500, the first race of the season, Bowyer finished 11th with 33 points. On lap 128, he ran out of fuel. The caution flag was raised for the 6th time and ultimately had to go back to the pits to refuel.

At Subway Fresh Fit 500, Bowyer only completed 306 laps, finished 30th. In the third race of the cup, Kobalt Tools 400, he led 3 laps and finished 6th clinching another 39 points. It took Bowyer another 12 races to get a victory when he finally won the Toyota/Save Mart 350, the 15th race of the cup.

Bowyer finished 16th at Quaker State 400, 29th at Coke Zero 400, and 3rd at Lenox Industrial Tools 301. It was after the 20th race of the cup, the Brickyard 400 that Bowyer appeared on the list of top 10 drivers? championship standings with 10th place and 643 points.

At Pennsylvania 400, Bowyer finished 8th. After 4 more races, at the Federated Auto Parts 400, Bowyer clinched the second victory of the season. After GEICO 400 where Bowyer finished 10th, he stood 6th on drivers? championship standings after Kasey Kahne. He had 2041 points to his name. GEICO 400 also marked the start of the Chase of the Championship.

In 28th race of the season, Sylvania 300, Bowyer finished 4th. With 2081 points to his name, Bowyer still held the 6th standing in drivers? championship. At AAA 400, he stood 9th.

Although Bowyer had won last two Good Sam Club 500 races, but in 2012 he could not repeat history. He finished a disappointing 23rd this time. Bank of America 500 held at Charlotte Speed Way was won by Bowyer, the 3rd victory for him in the season. With 2186 points, He stood 4th after Charlotte, 13 points behind Denny Hamlin. After Hollywood Casino 400, the points difference between and Bowyer and Hamlin went down to 5 points with Hamlin leading.

Tums Fast Relief 500 made the difference. Hamlin finished 33rd whereas Bowyer finished 5th. This put Bowyer ahead of Hamlin and Bowyer secured the 3rd position on drivers? championship standings with a lead of 3 points over Kasey Kahne who stood 4th.

In AAA Texas 500, Bowyer consolidated his 3rd position on drivers? championship standings. He finished the race 6th whereas Kahne finished 25th which gave Bowyer a lead of 22 points.

Things went the ballistic for Bowyer at AdvoCare 500. With only 1 lap to go till the finish, Bowyer got involved in an accident with Jeff Gordon. Gordon intentionally collided with Bowyer in response to a tangle that had taken place between the two a few laps ago. In the collision, Bowyer cut Gordon?s tire and Gordon had to park behind his team?s hauler. As Gordon parked, a member from Bowyer?s team shoved him from behind starting a full-fledged scuffle. When Bowyer entered the pits to get his car repaired, his team was nowhere to be found. Bowyer sprinted towards Gordon?s hauler before he was restrained from entering by a NASCAR official.

Following this incident, Bowyer finished 28th in the race. Kahne finished 4th and was able to move up to 2nd position on drivers? championship standings whereas Bowyer dropped down to 4th. After this incident, Bowyers lost all chances of winning the championship.

Still he was able to regain two places moving up to? 2nd on drivers? championship standings due to a 2nd place finished at Homestead, the final race of the championship.

Thus, a championship that Bowyer could have won only brought a silver medal for him. Still, Bowyer and his team were content with his performance since it was a career best for him.

Syrian Islamist rebels take Aleppo infantry base

BEIRUT (AP) ? An Islamist faction of Syrian rebels says its fighters have taken control of an infantry base in the northern city of Aleppo.

A statement by the al-Tawheed Brigade says the rebels, fighting to topple President Bashar Assad, "fully liberated" the military facility in Syria's largest city on Saturday.

Al-Tawheed Brigade is one of the largest rebel groups operating in Aleppo, which has been a major front in the civil war since July.

The statement was posted on al-Tawheed's official website on Sunday. It said the brigade's commander was killed in the battle for the base, which is the second major military installation in Aleppo the rebels overran in a week.

Ghana says it will abide by order to release ship

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? Ghana's government said Sunday it will abide by the U.N. Tribunal's order for the immediate release of an Argentine navy training ship seized two months ago at the request of an American hedge fund.

In a statement signed by Deputy Foreign Minister Chris Kpodo, the government said, "We will carefully consider the Tribunal's Order with a view to ensuring that it is given effect."

The ARA Libertad training ship was impounded Oct. 2 in the port of Tema at the behest of private creditors as collateral for unpaid bonds dating from Argentina's economic crisis a decade ago. Argentina appealed to the U.N.'s International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea for the ship's release, arguing that as a warship the Libertad is immune from being seized.

In an expedited ruling by a United Nations court in Germany, the court ordered that Ghana "forthwith and unconditionally release the frigate ARA Libertad" and ensure the ship and its crew can leave Ghanaian waters. It also ordered that the vessel be resupplied as needed.

Ghana's government said it has taken "careful note of the Tribunal's order." In the statement published Sunday, it said the arrest of the Argentine vessel arises from a dispute between Argentina and a private foreign company, adding that the government of Ghana was not a party to that dispute.

"The government of Ghana has always maintained that it does not consider itself to be in dispute with Argentina," the statement said. "Ghana cherishes its democratic credentials with a democratically elected government firmly committed to the rule of law and utmost respect for the separation of powers."

For that reason, it said it was "bound to respect the decision of the High Court in Accra to detain the ARA Libertad." However, it said "Ghana also respects international obligations on the rule of law," and that the country is firmly committed to those obligations.

Ghana's government said as much as it was firmly committed to the country's rule of law and constitution, it was also firmly committed to international obligations and expressed regret that "this matter has come to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea."

Ghana courts ordered the ship held on a claim by Cayman Islands-based NML Capital Ltd. Its owner, American billionaire Paul Singer, leads a group demanding payment in full, plus interest ? about $350 million ? for dollar-based Argentine bonds bought at fire sale prices after Argentina's 2001-2002 economic collapse forced a sharp devaluation of its currency.

The vast majority of bondholders accepted about 30 cents on the dollar years ago, and that is roughly what the holdouts led by Singer initially paid for the bonds.

The government said it has also taken the necessary measures to preserve the health and safety of the 44 sailors on board the vessel.

"The Ports and Harbors Authority is providing the Argentine sailors access to all necessary facilities at the Port of Tema. The sailors themselves are not in detention and are free to go from the vessel as they please," it said.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

?"Charming, spectacular, technically audacious? in short, everything you expect from a Peter Jackson movie. A feeling of familiarity does take hold in places, but this is an epically entertaining first course." From?Matthew Leyland of Total Film.?Full Review.??

"As epic, grandiose, and emotionally appealing as the previous pictures, The Hobbit doesn't stray far from the mold, but it's a thrilling ride that's one of the most enjoyable, exciting and engaging tentpoles of the year." From?Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist.?Full Review.??

"I'm holding the filmmaker responsible for getting us all back again - to feelings of excitement and delight. Vital as they are, Gollum and Bilbo can only do so much to keep us enchanted. Is Jackson able to sustain the magic in two more installments? I peer into Tolkien's Misty Mountains and embrace the journey. From?Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly.?Full Review.

Playing the Field

"Jessica Biel all but steals the show as Stacie." From?Roger Ebert of Chicago Sun-Times.?Full Review.

"As a movie, it's not much. But it's the best showcase for his charm that Butler has ever had." From Mick LaSalle of San Francisco Chronicle.?Full Review

"At some point you hope the actor (Butler) will find a movie that will give him the right material to make hearts truly beat faster. Until then, it appears we'll have to settle for films with more flaws than his characters. From Betsy Sharkey of Los Angeles Times.?Full Review.

Hyde Park on Hudson

"In beauty, tone, technical achievement and cinematic artistry on every level, Hyde Park on Hudson is a movie unto itself - funny, believable, historic and hugely entertaining." From?Rex Reed of New York Observer.?Full Review.

"This isn't a serious historical film. It plays different instruments than Spielberg's "Lincoln." Murray, who has a wider range than we sometimes realize, finds the human core of this FDR and presents it tenderly." From?Roger Ebert of Chicago Sun-Times.?Full Review.

"This hugely entertaining movie is about the wisdom and - with trenchant wit and sympathy - the human flaws in one of America's most idealized heads of state." From?Ella Taylor of NPR.?Full Review.

Killing Them Softly

"The film is terribly smart in every respect, with ne'er-a-false note performances and superb craft work from top to bottom." From?Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter.?Full Review.?

"This is an unrepentantly cynical take on the hope-and-change promised to the US in 2008; this year's election race makes it look even bleaker, an icily confident black comedy of continued disillusion." From?Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian.?Full Review.

"Killing them Softly is a lurid and nasty little nihilistic hitman noir, with an ingenuity that sneaks up on you." From?Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly.?Full Review.

lijansharma: kudals: molina anvil: Reference and Education: Proper ...

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Samsung ATIV S goes on sale at the big three Canadian carriers

Samsung ATIV S goes on sale at the top three Canadian carriers

Samsung's ATIV S has only just started trickling out into the marketplace, but Canadians will be happy to know they're some of the first to get their feet wet: Bell, Rogers and Telus have all made the Windows Phone 8 headliner available from today. We're seeing a wild variety in pricing that doesn't often happen with smartphones, however. Bell is offering the phone for $100 on a lengthy 3-year contract, but the amount drops to a momentary $80 at Rogers and just $30 at Telus' discounted price. Landing the ATIV S off-contract either costs $600 (at Bell and Rogers) or $650 on Telus. Locals shouldn't count on a walk-in purchase when there's talk at MobileSyrup of tight supply; they'll likely still be glad when they at least have the chance a week or more before their British counterparts.

GCI Forex News - GBP/USD: Sterling declined as S&P cuts UK outlook; trading flat this morning
GBP USD

GBPUSD Movement

For the 24 hours to 23:00 GMT, GBP fell 0.14% against the USD and closed at 1.6114.

Hours after Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne stated that keeping the government?s borrowing costs low is more important than retaining its top rating, the Standard & Poor?s (S&P) rating agency lowered the outlook on UK?s triple-A debt rating.

The S&P has put the UK?s AAA long-term credit rating on negative watch, citing fears that economic growth over the next two years could be weaker-than- forecast.

On the data front, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) indicated that, on a monthly basis, industrial trends orders in the UK improved to a reading of -12.0 in December, from a reading of -21.0 recorded in the preceding month.

In the Asian session, at GMT0400, the pair is trading at 1.6116, with the GBP trading steady from yesterday?s close.

The pair is expected to find support at 1.6082, and a fall through could take it to the next support level of 1.6048. The pair is expected to find its first resistance at 1.6152, and a rise through could take it to the next resistance level of 1.6188.

The currency pair is trading just below its 20 Hr and 50 Hr moving averages.

Getting Real With +Shadra Bruce, Owner of +MomsGetReal

obese woman 300x202 Understanding Weight Loss and 3 Steps You Can Take Now to Lose MoreThe basic rule of losing weight is to burn more calories each day than you consume. It?s really that simple.

Sort of.

There are a few other factors that come into play when you?re trying to lose weight.

You?re Not a Man

You?re automatically at a disadvantage if you?re a woman. Sorry, but men naturally have higher metabolisms than women. Men have more lean muscle than women, and muscle burns calories faster. Women, being designed primarily to support life, have extra fat genetically encoded into their bodies to make them a cushy environment for babies. Worse yet, when men do need to lose weight, they?ll lose it faster than women will.

You?re Not as Young as You Used to Be

The older you get, the harder it is to lose weight, because your metabolism slows. The older you get, the more important it becomes to maintain and even build lean muscle to combat the one to two percent per year metabolism drop you start experiencing in your 30s.

Thanks, Mom and Dad

Genetics play a huge role in your ability to lose weight and maintain weight loss. Your genes also play a role in your body shape, which can also impact your ability to lose weight easily or quickly. Apple-shaped women are likely to be able to lose weight easier than pear-shaped women, but apples are also at a much higher risk for heart disease and stroke.

You can do 3 things to improve your ability to lose weight.

  1. If you are struggling to lose weight, consider refocusing your energies on building lean muscle mass. You do not have to look like a female body builder to have lean, sinewy muscles that fuel your metabolism.
  2. Change your diet. While muscle helps increase your metabolism, fat cells slow it down. Swap out fatty foods for extra veggies, cut out trans fats and high fructose corn syrup completely, and be sure what fat you do eat is the good-for-you kind.
  3. Exercise regularly. Can?t fit in a 30-minute workout? That?s ok! Three 10-minute bursts throughout the day work equally well, if not better, than a sustained 30-minute workout. Just make sure you are getting your heart rate up and work up a sweat.

(ALWAYS check with your doctor before starting an exercise program or changing your diet!!)

class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1977" title="photo" src="http://www.xemarkets.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/photo1.png" alt="" width="200" height="200" />XEMarkets Forex Guru Avramis Despotis made a significant contribution to the 37th ICA Conference and Exhibition event series held in Morocco on 15-18 November 2012.

Within the framework of the main ICA (Interarab Cambist Association) conference topic Innovation in Finance: Ensuring Sustainable Growth, debated by former British PM Tony Blair and prominent treasury experts, who discussed crucial issues that affect the global financial-economic situation in general and the innovations needed in the financial markets in particular, Avramis Despotis delivered two presentations on technical analysis that can be considered genuine eye-openers.

Since previous ICA conferences have mainly promoted the significance of fundamental analysis, Mr. Despotis? aimed to emphasize that versatility in thinking and acting is as decisive for the big global financial players as for private investors. ?Fundamental analysis, however, is only one perspective to see in which direction Europe and the euro are heading at present?, says Mr Despotis, ?I am utterly glad to have had the opportunity to give my seminar attendees a close insight into an equally efficient method: technical analysis.?

src="http://www.xemarkets.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Avramis.png" alt="" title="Avramis" width="586" height="389" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3951" />

The seminar entitled Bridging the Trading Gap: The Technical Analysis Approach on 15-16 November aroused great interest among attendees, not least because Mr Despotis made it very clear that today?s investors must be able to quickly adapt to global financial and economic changes at all times. Innovative thinking and the openness to applying various techniques in investment practices is necessary.
/> As Mr Despotis claims, ?Technical analysis is the best method for investors to gain the big picture of a particular currency pair?s price movements.

It is crucial to recognize historical price movements and price patterns in order to predict future trends. Used in combination with proper risk and money management techniques, technical analysis completes fundamental analysis efficiently ? and this is what all those who trade the global financial markets should not only be aware of but also master.?

Solving a 100-year-old scientific hoax

It's a detective story with a century-old crime: The forgery of a supposed "missing link" in human evolution that went undetected for decades.

Now, researchers are set on identifying the long-dead culprits responsible for the famous Piltdown Man hoax ? involving forged bones said to belong to an early human ? and teasing out their motives.

Writing in this week's issue of the journal Nature, Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum, London, explains why he and his colleagues are still investigating a mystery that began 100 years ago.

"Personally, I am intrigued by the question of whether the hoax was driven by scientific ambition or by more jocular or vindictive motives," Stringer wrote. He and his colleagues plan to test the forged bones from the Piltdown case with modern methods, aiming to find out who most likely made them and why. [ The 6 Greatest Hoaxes in History ]

History of a hoax
The Piltdown Hoax is one of the most successful scientific frauds in history. In December 1912, British paleontologist Arthur Smith Woodward and amateur antiquarian Charles Dawson announced to the world that they'd found an amazing early human fossil in Piltdown, England. The curious specimen had a humanlike skull with an apelike jaw. Given the scientific name Eoanthropus dawsoni, it was more commonly called Piltdown Man.

Dawson and Woodward also reported that alongside Piltdown Man were a number of other stunning finds: stone tools, fossilized mammals and even an elephant bone. In 1916, Dawson claimed to have found more remains at a second site nearby.

According to Stringer's telling, some scientists did question the Piltdown Man bonanza discovery. They didn't immediately cry fraud, but suspected the fossil deposits had simply been mixed together over time, suggesting the ape jaw and humanlike skull weren't actually associated. [ Rumor or Reality: The Creatures of Cryptozoology ]

But it wasn't until the 1950s that Piltdown Man was exposed for the fraud it was. Chemical studies found the fossil to be less than 50,000 years old, not 1 million years as Dawson and Woodward claimed. Further testing showed the skull was likely from a modern human and the jaw probably from a modern orangutan.

Whodunnit?
The question is, who stained the bones to match each other and filed the teeth to appear more human?

That's the mystery Stringer and his colleagues hope to solve with radiocarbon dating, DNA testing and other molecular studies. If the researchers can pin down the origins of the bones used to make the faked fossils, Stringer wrote, they may be able to figure out which archaeologist on the project was responsible.

For example, if faked fossils from both the Piltdown site and Dawson's second site match up, the amateur probably did it, as he was the only discoverer of the second site, Stringer said. Dawson's motivation likely would have been scientific ambition and the desire to be accepted among the elite, Stringer added.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Ancient copy of Ten Commandments goes digital

The Cambridge Digital Library has just made available thousands of pages from fragile religious manuscripts for Internet users' perusal, including a 2,000-year-old copy of the Ten Commandments, known as the "Nash Papyrus."

    2. Solving a 100-year-old scientific hoax
    3. Alan Alda and kids ask: 'What is time?'
    4. First cheesemakers date back 7,500 years

Though 12 suspects in total have been accused in the hoax, there are three particularly likely suspects, other than Dawson. Woodward is one, as is Woodward's assistant Martin Hinton, a zoologist who was found after his death in 1961 to possess a collection of stained and altered bones. A Jesuit priest, Teilhard de Chardin, who discovered a tooth at Piltdown, may also have been involved.

Even the famous have not escaped suspicion. British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, famous for his Sherlock Holmes mysteries, has been accused of being mixed up in the hoax, according to the BBC. Doyle lived near Piltdown and was an archaeological society member. He wrote about ancient apes in his novel "The Lost World" and could have been inspired to fool the scientific community because of their mockery of one of his great passions, spiritualism. (Doyle also believed in fairies.)

A century-old mystery may hardly seem fresh, but Stringer sees the case as an important milestone in the history of science. The Piltdown hoax likely made scientists less willing to accept real early hominin fossils such as Astralopithecus africanus, also known as "Lucy," Stringer wrote. But the hoax also shows that even if it takes time, science will eventually ferret out the truth, he said.

"Regardless of who was responsible, the Piltdown hoax is a stark reminder to scientists that if something seems too good to be true, then perhaps it is," Stringer wrote.

Michigan's right-to-work will ripple across the US

19 hrs.

Whither Michigan, so may go other union-friendly states.

The right-to-work legislation signed by?Michigan Gov. Rick Synder?on Tuesday?marks a victory for Republican lawmakers and others who believe that unions hurt the U.S. economy.?The pair of?new laws,?which make?Michigan the 24th right-to-work state, make it harder for its?workers to organize and to maintain power because workers covered by union contracts will no longer be required to pay dues.

The impact of Michigan?s decision will be felt far beyond the borders of the once-staunchly pro-union state. Even though the ranks of union workers have been dwindling across the nation, the influence of big unions is still felt from the halls of government to corporate board rooms, and their clout affects everything from the economy to the political field. But the rising number of right-to-work states could further drain that influence.

"It?s a union story today, and a much broader economic story tomorrow,? said Harley Shaiken, a professor at UC Berkeley and an expert on union issues.?

That's partly because there are so few union members left for such legislation to directly impact.?Only 11.8 percent of American workers, or nearly 14.8 million people, were union members in 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That?s down substantially from just a decade earlier, when 13.3 percent of workers, or 16.3 million people, were union members.

Even in Michigan ? long considered the stronghold of unionized workers in America ? just 17.5 percent of workers, or 671,000 people, are union members.

That?s marks a very steep drop from the early 1970s, when about 40 percent of workers in the state were unionized, said Henry Farber, an economics professor at Princeton University and an expert on labor unions.

That figure has fallen steadily in the decades since, as heavily unionized automakers shed U.S. jobs because the auto industry became increasingly globalized.

Despite the gradual erosion of union representation?in Michigan, Farber said it?s still a stunning change to see such a highly industrialized state adopt right-to-work legislation that severely limits labor?s power.?

He expects Michigan's legislation to have a major ripple effect on other historically labor-friendly states like New York and New Jersey.

?The symbolism is mainly that it will embolden opponents in other states to try to do similar things,? he said.

That, in turn, could deal another blow to already weakened unions.

Those who oppose unions say that?s a victory for businesses who want more flexibility in how they manage their work?forces, and for workers who don?t want to be constrained by union rules or collective bargaining agreements. That, they say, will ultimately create more jobs and help the state?s economy.

?The right to work law will provide significant economic benefits for the state?s workers and small businesses,? Mark Mix, president of the National Right to Work Committee, said in a video posted on the organization?s website following the move in Michigan.?

But union proponents say such ripple effects could extend beyond just the minority of Americans who are directly covered by union contracts. They say that without unions, workers are at risk for lower wages and less job security.

Shaiken, the Berkeley professor, argues that unions are often key advocates, on both a state and national level, on issues that affect workers more generally. Those include affordable health care, unemployment insurance, Social Security and the minimum wage.

Michigan's new law also?could have political implications for Democrats who have relied on unionized labor's political and financial support,?Shaiken said.

Major unions such as the AFL-CIO and the UAW were staunch supporters of President Barack?Obama?s successful re-election bid. Any moves that hurt their membership numbers, or ability to collect dues, also could impact their ability to support Democrats in future elections.

There also could be a ripple effect on some unions' ability to financially support political moves that would help preserve their own livelihood, said Michael Hicks, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University.

His research has shown that it's quite difficult to judge the impact of right-to-work legislation on things like wages. But he said such laws can reduce the amount of money unions collect because workers are no longer required to pay dues, and many people opt to pocket that money instead.

He thinks that could affect how much clout?public sector unions, such as teachers, have to help support political efforts for things like maintaining pension benefits. Those are the type of hot-button issues state and local governments are sure to take up as they work to deal with severe budget shortfalls in the coming years.

"I do really believe that the biggest argument, the biggest push, for this (right-to-work legislation) was designed to weaken unions in their negotiations?with state governments," Hicks?said.

Farber, the Princeton professor, expects that there will be a modest drop in the number of workers who are unionized in Michigan once the legislation goes into effect. Also, because workers could choose to not pay dues and still be represented, unions could see less money coming in.

In addition, he said, new businesses or plants may be less likely to unionize because of the weakened union power.

Farber?s research also has shown that strongly unionized work?forces sometimes create a ?threat effect? where other workplaces offer higher wages and better benefits because they worry that if the workers aren?t treated as well they will unionize. He said that threat is lessened in right-to-work states.

?To see Michigan go this way ? it?s quite remarkable, really,? he said.
