Thousands attend NYC concert highlighting poverty

NEW YORK (AP) ? K'naan kicked off a free concert in Central Park on Saturday evening that also included performances by Black Keys and John Legend to call attention to poverty worldwide.

Dubbed the Global Citizen Festival, the concert lineup featured Neil Young, Band of Horses and Foo Fighters as well. Video of the event was streamed worldwide as about 60,000 music fans poured into the park.

The concert included a surprise appearance from Legend, who played "Imagine" at a piano on the Great Lawn stage, a short walk from where the song's author, John Lennon, once lived.

The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week and organizers used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers were forced to learn about an array of global problems, such as polio, malaria, child mortality, and polluted drinking water, in order to get a ticket.

Anyone wanting free tickets had to register at globalcitizen.org, which then required users to watch videos or read information about poverty-related issues. Each time material was consumed, users could earn points toward a drawing for tickets. Points were also accumulated by sharing information via Twitter or Facebook.

"Our social media campaign has been off the charts," said Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. The approach demonstrates a new model for harnessing digital tools that may be repeated for other big events with political or social messages.

Organizers said more than 71,000 people had signed up online, resulting in more than 3.5 million page views. On average, they spent just over six minutes consuming content or sharing information. Nearly 200,000 pieces of information were shared on Facebook, and just a bit more than that on Twitter. About 170,000 people signed petitions via the site, and there were 98,000 videos viewed to completion.

Evans said the project achieved its goals, set out last year, of getting more than 100,000 people to take action related to extreme poverty while telling a new story about the challenges. To that end, the site conveys information in detailed, documentary-like accounts and uses an array of video, graphics and stories that are friendly for mobile and digital consumption.

Financially, he said, the project also achieved its yearlong goal ? working with an array of organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Earth Institute and Rotary International ? of garnering $500 million in commitments to help fight poverty.

So now what?

Evans said that he's hoping the audience, built online and at the concert, will continue efforts by tweeting President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to halve extreme poverty by 2015, which is the key U.N. anti-poverty goal. And Evans is working on an announcement in October or November about "a major rock band" getting involved with the anti-poverty efforts.

Five Best Budget Pens [Hive Five]

Five Best Budget Pens Those of us who love our pens know that they can be more than just a writing instrument that we toss out and replace with a new one?they can be great tools that help us work and feel more creative. That said, most of us don't want to drop hundreds of dollars on a pen if we don't have to, so this week we asked you which budget pens were the ones you make sure never to let someone borrow and walk away with. Let's take a look at the top five, based on your nominations.

As with many Hives of this type, we're grouping together some popular models into brands, mostly because many of the brands here have so many varied models (and you voted for them all) that we think it's better to cover more territory than less. Still, you offered up way more great pen nominations than we can feature here, but we only have room for the top five.

Five Best Budget Pens

Pilot Pens (G2, V5/V7, Varsity, G-Tech/Hi-Tec)

Pilot pens were some of the first to show many of us that a writing implement could be more than just a utilitarian device. Whether you were introduced to your first Pilot pen in school or at work, you probably still remember your favorite, and many of you called out your faves?specifically the Pilot G2?for its affordability, its broad availability, and it's smooth, clean writing. Many of you also pointed out how great the V5 and V7 models, which have been around for ages, still are, and others noted that when you wanted a fountain pen, you can't go wrong with the Varsity disposable model. Excellent taste. Photo by hades2k.

Five Best Budget Pens

Zebra Pens (Sansa, F/G-301, F-701, F-402)

Many of Zebra's most popular models are known for their trademark all-steel, metallic design, and you may remember the first time you encountered one?if it was like the first time I picked one up, they were unlike any other pen you'd seen in a world of disposable plastic pens. They just look sharp and elegant, and using them is just as much fun. Not all of their models are that trademarked steel body though: the Zebra Sansa, for example, is fantastic gel pen with a transparent body and soft grip for smooth, comfortable writing. Many of you also praised Zebra for its portability and attractive design?most of their pens are unibody, and can slide into a pocket or bag without worrying you'll lose a cap in the process. Besides, they really do look and feel good to use. Photo by J Wynia.

Five Best Budget Pens

Uniball Pens (Jetstream, Signo, Onyx, Vision)

Uniball pens come in multiple shapes, sizes, and form factors, but one thing is certain: you reall love them. Whether it's the quick-drying Jetstream series, designed for speedy writers who don't want their ink to smudge, or the rich, smooth black ink of the Signo and Gel lines, or the utility but smooth, free-flowing rollerball feel of the Vision and Onyx lines, Uniball has a pen engineered for whatever writing style you prefer, that's comfortable enough to use for long periods, and at a price point that makes sure you can pick up more than a few and keep them around your home or office. You could write with different Uniball models for weeks and still fall in love with each new one you tried. Photo by Brett Jordan.

Five Best Budget Pens

Lamy Pens (Safari, Al-Star, Vista)

Lamy's line of modern, stainless steel, and brushed aluminum pens earned high praise from those of you who don't want to break the bank on your writing instruments, but don't want to sacrifice good-looking style and comfort either. Whether it's the minimal, solid-color-and-clip design of the Safari line of fountains, gels, and rollerballs, or it's the more metallic tones of the Al-Stars, or even the transparant Vistas, many of you approved of Lamy's affordability and smooth, elegant writing. Even the shapely, designer Accent line earned nominations, and we have to agree?they all look good, and write better. Photo by vinyleraser.

Five Best Budget Pens

Sharpie Pens

Sharpie's best known for their permanent markers, but their new pens offer the same quality non-toxic, smear-proof ink that?at least in this case?won't bleed through the paper as you use it. Sharpie's medium and fine point pens come with soft tips for smooth, consistent writing, and the best part is that they're available virtually anywhere. No refills or fancy designs on these, but those of you who nominated them love them to the point where at least one of you said that if you used one, you'd never vote for anything else. Sharpie's had a rough road with some of their pens, but we have to say: Sharpie's newer pens are great, and well worth a shot, especially considering the price point. Photo by redspotted.

That's it! Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to put them to an all out vote to determine the winner.

We have plenty of honorable mentions this week, mostly because the voting was so ridiculously close that there were multiple ties. First, one goes to The Fischer Space Pen, which many of you nominated for its clean, metallic designs that range from utilitarian to bullet-shaped, and the fact that they can write at all angles. The price doesn't hurt, ranging around $20-$50 for most models, and hey-they work in space!

Also worth mentioning are Bic Pens, including the Atlantis, Cristal, and Round Stic, all of which many of you praised for their affordability, multiple varieties, colors, styles, and writing thicknesses depending on your preference, their super-broad availability, and their smooth feel while writing.

FInally, we want to give a shoutout to Pentel Pens, including the Energel and R.S.V.P, which both offer great style, bang for your buck, and smooth, clean writing when used. Again, they fell just shy of the votes required to make the top five, which should show you how large the volume of nominees this week really was.

We got a ton of great nominees this week?way more than we could feature, even though we wanted to. Have something to say about one of the contenders? Want to make the case for your personal favorite, even if it wasn't included in the list? Remember, the top five are based on your most popular nominations from the call for contenders thread from earlier in the week. Make your case for your favorite?or alternative?in the discussions below.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

Amazon Mulling Over Online Wine Sales [REPORT] | WebProNews

Amazon.com may be the next big go-to place to buy booze on the web, as the company is looking to get (back) into the online wine sales business.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon announced their plans at a workshop event in Napa Valley, California ? one attended by around 100 different local wineries. This wouldn?t be Amazon?s first step into the online wine business. The company was pursuing a deal with now defunct New Vine Logistics back in 2009. That partnership dissolved when investors pulled out of the company.

But this time, it would be different. Here?s how it will work:

Amazon will take 15% commission on the wine sales, and will also charge wineries a $40 monthly fee simply to be a part of the online marketplace. Unlike their last venture, Amazon would be passing on the packaging and shipping obligations to the wineries themselves. Amazon, in this new setup, would simply serve as an online marketplace for transactions.

Even if the wineries have to handle the backend, most would probably be thrilled to have their products listed on a site with the traffic of Amazon.com.

According to the WSJ, the online wine service will probably launch in time for the holidays.

Of course, alcohol sales and shipping is a tricky proposition on the internet. Every state has different laws regarding who can ship what, where. Some states are nearly split 50/50 with wet and dry counties. A state like Alabama, for instance, prohibits all direct shipments. Shipping to Oregon, on the other hand, is a breeze (considering permits are obtained and taxes paid).

Still, the online wine business could be a huge bost for Amazon, and smaller wineries across the country. Wine connoisseurs would love nothing more than to be able to have local wines from different regions all over the country ship directly to their doorsteps.

Wine isn?t the only thing that Amazon has a hand in these days. Just yesterday, Vine.com launched as on online marketplace for ?green? products. Vine.com falls under the Quidsi network, which Amazon acquired back in 2010.

Bristol University | News from the University | School for Policy Studies

Are you a man who has been in an adult gay or bisexual relationship where there may have been issues of domestic violence or abuse?? If so, then researchers from the University of Bristol are seeking your help for a new study that aims to assess whether the right support services are available.

Cassandra Jones, a researcher from the University?s School for Policy Studies, is seeking 20 to 25 gay or bisexual men who have been in adult relationships and encountered domestic violence to find out what they think of their relationship(s) with adult partner(s), community and seeking support.

The study, which can be conducted anonymously online or via telephone, will involve answering a few questions on your relationship followed by a more in-depth interview about your views and experiences of your relationships, community and seeking support.

Cassandra Jones said: ?We realise that talking about domestic violence and conflict can be a difficult subject, however without knowing what the issues are and experiences have been, we have no way of establishing whether the right support networks are in place.

?All the information is completely confidential and we will feed back results once the study has finished.?

If you would like to find out further information or take part in this study, contact Cassandra Jones, tel mobile 07741 086 924, ptcaj@bristol.ac.uk

Dear Mr. President, Here's What I'd Like to see in your National ...

'U.S. President Obama at Intel's Fab 42' photo (c) 2012, Nick Knupffer - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/Each November brings about National Adoption Awareness Month. ?This month was originally a State-based initiative that was founded to encourage the adoption of children (who are legally cleared for adoption) in the U.S. foster care system. ?It has become a Nationally recognized month, and unfortunately, it?s commonly accepted meaning has changed. ?Rather than sticking with the month?s original intentions, various adoption groups, agencies, and adoption facilitators alike have used the awareness of adoption this month brings to advertise all types of adoption. ?The misinformation that is spread as a result of aggressive marketing is only part of the problem: the actual purpose of the month is negated because attention is diverted away from the needs of those children in foster care.

As National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) is rolls around in November, activists in the Adoption Reform blogging community take on the task of either correcting some of the misinformation spread by adoption marketing or attempt to place the focus back on foster care needs. ?At the beginning of the month, a lot of blog posts address the Presidential Proclamation of the month?mostly in critique. ?These proclamations reveal that the government has forgotten what this month is about. ?They also reveal that the government is either unaware of, or unwilling to admit to, a balanced view of adoption that lasts throughout the lifetime of each person it affects. ?So, in preparation for NAAM, which is a little over a month away, I thought I?d list what I?d like to see in this year?s proclamation.

FOCUS on the needs of foster children (and please note the rest of this post tries to do the same). ?Frame the adoption discussion around the needs of children. ?Adoption is about finding families for children who need them. ?It is about working together in the best interests of a child. ?Adoption should also be about a lifetime of post-adoption support for fostered adults and adult adoptees adopted from foster care.

INCLUDE everyone who is impacted by adoption. ?Of all entities, the government certainly should not be one to perpetuate the image of adoption as the shiny picturesque moment where the happy family brings home a child. ?Adoption involves the?interaction?of many systems and people who either have their own needs or are accountable for upholding the needs of others. ?This includes foster children; adopted children; adult adoptees; foster parents; original parents; adoptive parents; the extended family members of the original, foster, and adoptive families; and various professionals and organizations involved in the adoption system.

BALANCE the ideas that adoption, when working well, can provide homes for children who need them and that it doesn?t always effectively work this way. ?Balance the concept that adoption should help children with adoption?s obligation to also provide lifetime post-adoption support. ?Balance also means acknowledging that this month is not a celebration of the institution of adoption. ?Celebrate the individual people who are impacted by adoption. ?Celebrate instances where adoption was made better. ?Celebrate great accomplishments by adoptees. ?Celebrate the children who are resilient through life?s losses. ?Remember, adoption is not a celebration for everyone. ?A proclamation should seek to be inclusive and respectful of a variety of experiences and views.

ACKNOWLEDGE that there are problems, that the government knows what these problems are, and what ways the government is actively working to fix these problems as soon as possible. ?And if nothing is being done in regards to a certain issue?acknowledge that this in and of itself is a problem. ?Remember that an adoptee from any type of adoption may also wind up in foster care or may have some foster care experience. ?Therefore, problems existing within other types of adoption also intersect in foster care and foster care adoption. ?Just a few major issues that could be mentioned include: adoptee citizenship and deportation; adoptee identity needs and lack of birth certificate access; a lack of competent post-adoption support in the U.S.; the need for accountability and Universal?Accreditation?of agencies; open adoption is not legally recognizable in all States which means foster adoptees risk losing contact with their original family and siblings; the lack of tracking and inadequate sharing of information between government systems that monitor adoption and child welfare; the lack of government oversight and adequate regulation of adoption; the inadequate (or altogether absent) tracking of adoption?dissolution?and disruption. ?Acknowledge the systemic barriers that prevent foster children from having their original families preserved and that also prevent children who need an adoptive family from receiving one.

AVOID tired rhetoric. ?The same old adoption clich?s being purported year after year sends the message that our government is not listening (and perhaps it isn?t). ?It?s sad that adoption can be summed up in a speech in a few lines that could be easily copied, pasted, and slightly edited from one year to the next?but that?s not the reality for those who live adoption every single day. ?Avoid referring to adoption as a charity project. ?Adoption?s proper purpose to be there for children who actually need to be adopted does not make adoptees someone?s charity project.

Will we ever have a truly balanced, respectful, inclusive NAAM proclamation? ?Who knows.

What would you like to see included in the proclamation?

Lose Weight And Look Great With These Tips | overcomefearfast.com

With a heavy dose of knowledge and some willpower, anybody has the power to lose weight. This article provides you with a pocketful of advice to send you on your way to successful weight loss. Don?t get discouraged, even when losing weight seems impossible.

Avoid overeating at work. The majority of average jobs lead people to sitting at desks all day long. Try to bring documents to coworkers; this gives you a bit of exercise. Just a little bit of physical activity each day will help you feel better and burn more calories.

Try to keep your weight loss properly balanced by drinking lots of water and following proper weightlifting techniques. You might get stretch marks from losing weight: toning your body and staying hydrated should help reduce these marks. Use a topical cream if necessary.

TIP! When you eat breakfast, say ?no? to juice and say ?yes? to skim milk. Milk has the advantage of leaving you feeling fuller longer and adding vitamins to your diet.

Maintain an exercise routine. Become a member of a gym if your time and finances allow. You may also want to try jogging, Pilates or Tai Chi. Talk with your doctor prior to beginning any program if there is a chance you have any heath problems. There are plenty of exercises that you can do from home.

If you are curious about how many calories you burn walking around on an average day, buy a pedometer. Decreasing weight involves increasing activity. Walking 10,000 steps, or about five miles per day can help you to lose weight. When you know your average amount of steps, you can give yourself challenges to increase the count. With each step you make, you become one step closer to achieving weight loss.

Switch up your schedule and eat your largest meal at lunch time instead of at night. Make your evening meal a simple sandwich in place of the full dinner you usually have. You burn far more calories in the daytime and less in the evening, so it makes much more sense to consume more in the daytime and far less at night.

TIP! If you are struggling to lose weight with traditional weight loss programs, try an alternative like ?Alli?. These types of drugs are designed to minimize fat absorption during the body?s digestive process.

Try to reduce stress in your life. It becomes tempting to eat food that is not healthy when you are under a lot of stress It is easier to focus on your long term goal and keep on the right track when you are living a healthy, happy, stress free existence.

Percent Milk

A calorie journal will help you lose weight more effectively. When you are more conscious of your food choices, you are far more likely to make good ones. Exercise is definitely very important, but a healthy diet really improves your chances of success at weight loss.

TIP! For optimum health, always eat smaller portions. Research has shown eating smaller meals will help you achieve and stay at a lower body weight.

Use reduced-fat two-percent milk to flavor your morning coffee instead of half-and-half or whole milk. Replacing two percent milk with skim milk is an even healthier choice.

Don?t attempt to restrict yourself from every food that you crave. There is no denying that certain types of junk food are tasty. Cravings for junk food can be extreme while you diet. Work on staying strong, but you do not need to always deny yourself. Try a low-calorie substitute for your favorite food.

Dietitians can be a fabulous resource to help you lose weight. A dietician is mainly a teacher who will help people make healthier choices based on the nutrition of the food. Consuming a healthier diet overall is a huge component in any weight loss plan.

TIP! If you want to lose weight, keep your stress under control. If you become stressed, your body will retain calories in order to defend itself.

Eat around the same time, so that you can get in a routine while on a diet. Eating on a schedule helps you know exactly when you will eat next, which can eliminate unnecessary snacking or foraging between meals. Set yourself an eating regimen for each day and adhere to it.

Your weight is always fluctuating naturally. This is why it?s important to watch your average weight and not think to much of day to day changes. You are doing a great job if your weight continues to drop steadily.

When you must choose between salad and soup at a restaurant, choose clear soup or a salad. Eating either, however, will have you eating less of your calorie-laden entree.

TIP! Conventional wisdom has long held that drinking significant quantities of water is a great weight loss strategy. Were you aware of the fact that drinking cold water makes your metabolism work harder? Drinking icy water stimulates your metabolism to bring your temperature up.

Weight Training

If you are trying to lose weight opt for cardiovascular exercise over weight training. Weight training is great for overall fitness, but cardio is what really burns the calories. When it comes to losing weight, aim for elevated heart and respiratory rates instead of increased muscle mass.

One way to lose weight faster is to boost your metabolism. Consuming omega-3 fats found in oils, fish and nuts is a sound method of doing this.

TIP! If you are having trouble making a change to your daily habits, think about getting the assistance of a professional. There are many professional services that can help with weekly recipes, advice, regular guidance, and shopping lists.

Weighing yourself on a regular basis is a great way to keep up the motivation to lose weight. This could be different, depending on the person. Weigh yourself on a regular basis. It is best to be done daily.

If you enjoy pasta, whole wheat noodles are a great options for you. Whole wheat noodles help fill you up faster, and are much healthier than ?white? pasta. Pay attention to the calorie and nutritional content of the sauces that you use.

Contrary to popular belief, it is necessary to eat fat to burn fat. Not all fats are bad; fatty acids like Omega-3, 6, and 9 are noticeably absent from almost any preservative-laden food product on the shelf at the grocery store. Fatty acids like these, found in legumes and fish, can help you lose weight and lower cholesterol.

TIP! Speak with family and friends about their diets. Select people you would be interested in looking like.

Do not eat as many condiments on hot dogs and sandwiches to cut down on calories. While a sandwich or a hot dog might not be too bad by itself, the additional sugar and calories in these condiments can make them a bad choice. If you really need to sue these, only put a small quantity on your food.

Use versions of foods that have lower calories so you can lose weight more effectively. There?s nothing like runaway cravings to cause a dieter to fall off the wagon. But, if you choose lower-calorie versions of the foods you love, it is possible to enjoy the flavors without sacrificing weight loss.

Make a complete list of healthy ingredients to buy before heading to the grocery store, and most importantly ? stick to it. You may find it helpful to also set a time limit for yourself for how long you plan to be in the grocery store. This can keep you from wasting time looking at processed foods.

TIP! Workout with your pets. Pets provide unique weight loss motivation and help.

It is vital to keep tabs on the amount of calories you eat daily. The easiest way to do this is to take note of the calorie count of each meal and then compare it against one?s actual caloric needs. Ensure that your calories are equally divided throughout your day to ensure you do not go over your caloric allowance.

Plan meals ahead for a healthier diet. Having a healthy plan in place makes it harder to slip up and eat something unhealthy because you can?t think of anything else to eat. Always follow your meal plans. You can always mix and match the meals to prevent the plan from becoming boring, but you have to at least stick to the meals you choose and not substitute them with unhealthy choices. The effort that you put into preparing the food will burn a few additional calories.

A great way to shed pounds is to jog on the beach regularly. Running on sand burns more calories than running on concrete or grass, as the sand acts as resistance. Additionally, you have to use more muscles in your feet when running on sand in order to keep your balance.

TIP! Keeping a food diary is a great way to track and control how many calories you are consuming in a day. By keeping a journal of all the foods you consume, you will make yourself accountable for everything you eat.

Drink coffee to begin losing weight. Coffee can provide a needed boost, as long as it isn?t overused.

You probably now must realize that losing weight is not an easy process, although it is attainable. You have been given some advice that, if used correctly, will help you to achieve your goals. While you may occasionally get discouraged, make every effort to follow through, and you can reach your objectives.

If you are doing a weight loss plan, track your weight loss over time. You may choose to weigh yourself on a regular basis or take particular measures. Motivate yourself this way to keep trudging on towards your goals.

TIP! A small plate can keep you from overeating. There have been studies that show that we eat what is on the plate no matter how big or small the portions are.

A new report from NASA suggests that the agency prioritize bringing samples back from Mars to Earth for study. NASA will not make a specific plan for how they'll achieve this goal until after the president releases his 2014 budget in February. ?

The next steps in NASA's Mars exploration strategy should build toward returning Martian rocks and dirt to Earth to search for signs of past life, a new report by the space agency's Red Planet planning group finds.

The report, released today (Sept. 25) by the?Mars Program Planning Group?(MPPG), lays out a series of options that NASA could employ to get pieces of the Red Planet in scientists' hands here on Earth. The space agency is now mulling those options and could announce its chosen path by early next year, when the White House releases its proposed budget for fiscal year 2014.

"The first public release of what plans, you know, we definitively have would not be until the president presents that budget to Congress in February of 2013," John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate, told reporters today.

NASA put together the MPPG this past March to help?restructure its Mars strategy?in the wake of cuts to the space agency's robotic exploration program.

The MPPG was instructed to consider NASA's newly constrained fiscal situation and the priorities laid out by the U.S. National Research Council's Planetary Decadal Survey, which was released last year. President Barack Obama's directive that the agency get astronauts to the vicinity of?Mars?by the mid-2030s was another factor, NASA officials said.

The MPPG's focus on sample-return should thus come as no surprise. It was a top priority of the Decadal Survey, and sample-return could help spur and work in concert with NASA's plans for human exploration of Mars, Grunsfeld said. [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]

"Sample-return?represents the best opportunity to find symmetry technologically between the programs," he said. "Sending a mission to go to Mars and return a sample looks a lot like sending a crew to Mars and returning them safely."

Humans could even be involved in the sample-return process, according to the MPPG report. Astronauts aboard NASA's?Orion capsule, which is currently under development, could intercept the Martian sample in deep space, secure it in a contained environment, and bring it safely down to Earth.

"It is taking advantage of the human architecture, because we anticipate it will be there," Grunsfeld said. "And it potentially solves an issue of, when we return samples, somewhere we have to make sure that the samples are completely contained so there's no chance ? remote as it may be ? that there is something on Mars that could contaminate Earth."

After Squatting At AOL For 2 Months, Eric Simons Launches Claco, A Collaboration Network For Teachers

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at 12.38.19 PMIf you happened to pass through AOL's offices in Palo Alto last November or December, you might have had your first run-in with the elusive creature "founder squatter." Say what? Following in the grand boot-strapping, couch-surfing tradition, last winter, Eric Simons spent two months squatting at AOL's office, sleeping on couches and pilfering Ramen noodles and other snacks left out for employees. He was hard at work building Class Connect, a platform on which teachers can post and share lesson plans.

No Google Maps coming to iPhone 5 yet - Know Your Cell

Apple is facing a bit of heat for its Maps app?in iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, but don't expect Google to come to the rescue soon. Google's Eric Schmidt said the search company hasn't submitted an alternative mapping app for the iPhone yet.?

Google isn't taking that option off the table but it hasn't done anything yet, according to Reuters.?

"I'm not doing any predictions," Schmidt said about a Google Maps app for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 devices. "We want them to be our partner. We welcome that. I'm not going to specualte at all what they're going to do. They can answer that question as they see fit."

Apple and Google had been partners on the iPhone's Maps and YouTube app for the first five iPhones but the contract was apparently up before the release of the iPhone 5. Apple moved away from Google's mapping data in favor of its own custom app, which uses data from the likes of TomTom.?

The early reviews of the Apple Maps in iOS 6 and on the iPhone 5?haven't been pretty. The service has been filled with errors, incomplete data and it doesn't offer as great of an experience as we're used to from iOS and the iPhone. As more and more people use the app, though, it should improve.?

Until we see a Google Maps app for the iPhone, there is a workaround to get those on your iOS 6 device. Simply follow these instructions?to get the Google Maps Web version on your iPhone 5.

Michael Schumacher faces ten-place grid penalty for hitting Jean-Eric Vergne ? Formula 1 news

Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher has been hit by a ten-place grid penalty for hitting Jean-Eric Vergne of Toro Rosso at the back in the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix.

Schumacher smashed Vergne from behind at turn 14 in the preceding race held at Marina Bay Street Circuit which unfortunately resulted in the retirement of both the drivers.

It will be important to mention that it is not the first time in the ongoing season when the veteran German driver has hit a car in the rear as he collided into Bruno Senna of Williams in the Spanish GP for which he received a five-place grid penalty.

Therefore, this time, the race stewards have given the seven-time world champion a ten-place grid penalty instead of five-place because it is his second accident of the season.

The record championship holder said that he is feeling very sorry for the causing the crash and expressed that he apologised to the French driver straight away.

"It was obviously a very unfortunate ending to my race this evening when I ran into the car of Vergne who accepted my apology straight afterwards," Schumacher said.

In addition, he said that he is not sure what happened with his car, however, he said that he tried his best to slower his car for the turn and pushed the brakes which didn?t work properly and eventually he hit the Frenchman.

Besides, he said he is feeling quite upset over the incident as he was aiming to score some reasonable points in the previous race with his updated car.

"I am not totally sure why it happened like this; I was braking but the deceleration was not as strong as it usually would be, and I could not avoid running into the car in front of me. We have to find out what has happened. Up until then, I think it would have been possible to get some points this evening," he added.

Nonetheless, he asserted that he is positively looking forward to perform well in the forthcoming races and is targeting to secure a good position in this year?s championship fight.

5 Tips on Why Outsourcing Your Website ... - Business 2 Community

When was the last time that you, as a small-business owner, updated your website? For many of us the answer is quite a long time ago. We seem to be so engrossed in trying to make the business ?tick? on a daily basis as we deal with clients, order fulfillment, marketing initiatives, and a whole host of other distractions that are more important to making a business successful. A website is not simply something that sits there and hopefully garners some interest and possibly some leads. It must be a dynamic property that is a joy to visit and is often updated.? A well designed and executed website will drive leads and customers to your business.? A great website is a first impression for your business.

Tip #1. Build a Website? ? you know you need one, but you don?t have the timeIt is said that 50% of businesses do not have a website at all. This is a remarkable statistic and it?s probably as much to do with the fact that small-business owners just don?t know where to start. A virtual assistant can get a website up and running for a business in a remarkably short amount of time given the correct initial guidance and direction.

Tip #2. Website Re-design ? you have a website, but it needs updatingWhen people visit a website today they expect to see something that is exciting, enticing and vibrant, otherwise these people click away. It?s almost certainly time for you to redesign your old static website, but you are not the expert in these matters ? a good business consulting firm that offers Virtual Solutions can help. So much can change on a weekly or monthly basis in the world of website design but your outsourced Virtual IT team will be able to keep on top of these changes and integrate the latest and best.

Tip #3. Website Content Creation ? you have ideas?but what do you do with them?Your website is only as good as the content within. People are looking for information and you must tell them that you have the correct information, together with the products and services that can help them deal with their problem. The material on your website must be regularly updated, very pertinent and directly related to the problems faced by your business prospects.

Tip #4.Website Management ? Management?? Isn?t creating the site and the content enough, now I have to manage it too? There are many regular ?household chores? associated with owning and operating a website. For example, dedicated organizations host the site and will require payment on a regular basis and will sometimes raise questions according to bandwidth allocations. Your valuable domain names will expire from time to time and will need to be renewed. As a small business owner if you overlook or ignore some of these chores it can lead to disaster. This is why outsourcing to a Virtual expert with cloud experience is essential .? They are always available and low cost allowing you time to focus on your other business needs.

Tip #5.?Website / Blog Search Engine Submission. If you don?t promote the existence of your website nothing will happen. In the Internet world the majority of people look for information by interacting with search engines. Many small-business owners don?t realize that you have to go through a concerted procedure to notify the search engines not only of your existence, but what your site is all about. The biggest engine of all ? Google ? has webmaster solutions and a specific dashboard, and the recipe for success changes. The right virtual solutions company can make sure that everything is updated correctly and consistently in order to ensure that your website is at the very least seen.

Kosovo Ruling Party MPs to Testify in Bllaca Trial :: Balkan Insight

A Kosovo court has summoned Azem Syla, a former supreme commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA,? and Faitmir Xhelili, former head of the crime directorate of the defunct Kosovo Secret Agency, SHIK, to testify at the trial of Nazim Bllaca, a self-proclaimed former SHIK assassin.

The two are due to appear at Pristina?s District Court in mid-October to confirm the alibi of one of the defendants, Sadik Abazi, and explain their role within the disbanded organization.

Both Syla and Xhelili are members of parliament from the ranks of the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, led by Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.

Kosovo was shaken by Bllaca's revelations in 2009, when he claimed he had murdered an Albanian collaborator with the Serbian authorities in 1999.

Former KLA fighter Fahredin Gashi was later sentenced to 18 years' jail following Bllaca?s testimony.

In a second trial, known as ?Bllaca 2?, six defendants, Sadik Abazi, Shaban Syla, Bekim Syla, Driton Hajdari, Fahredin Uka and Fahredin Gashi, are charged - based on Bllaca?s testimony - with killing Salih Gashi and with two counts of attempted murder.

Gashi was shot dead on June 15, 1999, apparently because he was an activist with the PDK's rival, the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK.

The LDK, then led by Kosovo?s first president, Ibrahim Rugova, provided the main political opposition to the PDK.

During the course of the trial, Bllaca mentioned Azem Syla and Fatmir Xhelili as two of the top three figures in the SHIK.

Sadik Abazi?s laywer, Ilaz Kadolli, told the court that Bllaca?s claim that he had killed ?Ibush Kllokoqi with Azem Syla?s pistol? needed to be proven by the witness himself.

The ex-director of SHIK, Kadri Veseli, testifying in the "Bllaca 2" trial, told the court that neither Bllaca nor any of the six suspects in the case had ever been agents for the service.

He also insisted that none of his agents had ever been instructed to kill people.

Veseli was said to have been appointed to run SHIK by Hashim Thaci in March 1999 and reported only to him.

Veseli told the court that the agency had at one time mustered 92 workers, "including technical staff".

SHIK emerged from the ranks of the KLA following the end of the war with Serbia in 1999, and then became the intelligence arm of the PDK.

The agency announced in 2008 that it had officially disbanded.

According to a leaked classified report by the EU law and order mission, EULEX, the PDK pursued a strategy of killing its political opponents in the LDK after the end of the conflict in Kosovo.

The report, which focused on determining whether a pattern of selecting victims existed, highlighted a breakdown of different crimes, murders, attempted murders and grievous assaults, mainly from 1999 to 2001. Some occurred as late as 2003.

12 killed in Shiite-Sunni clashes in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Twelve fighters were killed in northern Yemen on Saturday in ongoing clashes between Shiite tribesmen allied with the country's former leader and ultraconservative Sunnis, security officials said, as the new president grapples with challenges to his authority.

Tensions have long existed between Salafi Islamists, who are Sunni Muslims, and former Hawthi rebels, who are Shiite Muslims. Nearly 200 people died in fighting late last year between the two sides in northern Saada province.

The latest clashes in neighboring Amran province revealed a new alliance between Hawthis and loyalists of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whom the group fought in a costly six-year war until a cease-fire was reached in early 2010.

They also underline the larger regional rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia for influence in northern Yemen, an impoverished nation on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, at the doorstep of several oil-producing Gulf nations.

Residents trapped in street fighting in the city of Raada in Amran say the Salafis from the opposition Islah Party were fighting Hawthis teamed up with Saleh loyalists, the two sides firing at each other with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons. In another sign of a new alliance, Sheikh Ali Sinan al-Ghouli, a Saleh supporter, told The Associated Press he traveled to the area to assist the Hawthi rebels.

The clashes come a week after Yemen's government installed new governors from the Islah Party in Amran, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of the capital Sanaa, and two other provinces around Saada where Hawthis are concentrated.

According to military analyst Mohammed Ahmed al-Subayhi, the decision by President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to appoint Islah Party members as governors reflects a larger regional rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

"Saudi Arabia believes that any Hawthi expansion in the region enhances Iran's role in Yemen and poses a threat to the kingdom," al-Subayhi said.

The retired military general added that the Sunni Hashid tribe in Amran is closely aligned with Saudi Arabia.

Shiite-led Iran and Yemen's powerful Sunni Muslim neighbor to the north, Saudi Arabia, are bitter regional rivals and have competing strategic interests in the Gulf. Saudi Arabia was a key player in brokering the deal that forced Saleh to hand over power to Hadi in February, after nearly a year of protests against him.

In July, Hadi warned Iran to stop spying in his country in the wake of claims that an Iranian espionage operation had been uncovered. The U.S. ambassador in Yemen has also repeatedly said that Iran is meddling in the country and playing on specific factions, a reference to Hawthi rebels in the north.

Also on Saturday, security officials said a suspected al-Qaida suicide bomber wounded three people in the southern province of Aden, among them the commander of local tribes who fought alongside the government against the group earlier this year. Abdel-Latif el-Sayid was in critical condition, officials said.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen took advantage of the country's political turmoil to take over large swaths of the country's south last year, but the government and local tribes won back control.

Video: Romney camp shows signs of frustration

>> in mark murray from our team before we get to the panel. mark, romney 's effective tax rate 2011 , 14%. that's about what he said, but that's obviously lower than many americans who make far less. back to the timing here. is this an attempt to change this subject? does this help us understand? usually as you well know people don't sound out a blast e-mail on a friday at 3:00 p.m . if they want something to be highly talked about that they see as beneficial to them.

>> that's right. i mean, you always have fridays the times to have a news dump that people aren't paying as much attention. you want to put bad news out there. tamron , the big context as peter was talking about, this is perhaps the roughest three-week stretch in mitt romney 's presidential campaign . and certainly topped off by that controversial 47% video that came out earlier this week. you end up seeing them trying to get out as much tax returns as possible to completely change the page. if the romney campaign wants to start changing the conversation, they want to get everything behind them. that includes these tax records. i will say, however, it is really interesting they provided this 20-year summation on mitt romney 's tax returns from 1990 to 2009 . really, when you see the effective tax rates , they say there was an average tax rate of 20%, the lowest ever 13%, which is similar to this 2011 tax return . if it was just that, you would think they would have released this a long time ago so they wouldn't have the problems, the political problems that they have now. what we don't have only because we get this summary, we don't get the individual things in these tax returns . some in some ways with the romney campaign aren't necessarily the tax rates but what's in the tax returns over the last 20 years.

>> which means they aren't revealing a full transparency when it comes to his tax returns ?

>> that's right. mitt romney was only about a month ago where he said i think the tax rate i paid was about 13%. this could actually be correct, but it's what is in those tax returns that they seem very hesitant and reluctant to give up.

>> let me bring in danny vargas. let me get your reaction. you heard mark say that the cam faine or blind trust will release a summary from 1990 to 2009 . still not a clear picture of the governor's tax returns in that period. does that benefit the campaign at all when you have kind this half- open door even still?

>> i do think that at the end of the day we're really not talking about anything that's newsworthy here. everybody knows he's a wealthy man. everybody knows that most of the money he'd made is through investment activities, which means risk capital . everybody knows he's a generous man in terms of charities. he gives a lot of money to charity. there's not much newsworthy here. it's good to get some information out there from the last 20 years it to show he has paid taxes and has made a lot of money.

>> danny , the way you put it, very lackadaisical, there's no big deal there, which makes this all the mother curious that governor romney would not have released this information prior to today. why hold onto it if what you say is true? there's nothing there. what's the big deal ? it brings back to the question his critics have offered up. what are you hiding, if it was not or is not a big deal ?

>> well, if you recall, tamron , i was one of the people that said he should have released more earlier on to get it behind us. there's nothing newsworthy there. i think their concern in the campaign was that you would have folks from the opposition going through every possible detail with a fine-toothed comb to find anything to use against the governor. but i think it -- had it been released sooner, we would have put this behind us and moved on to the more important issues at hand.

>> let me bring you into what danny said. anything ushg use. they're talking about the romney campaign seemingly following the news cycle of the day. perusing anything from the obama campaign looking for that opening in the last several weeks here, including this line about the president saying you can't change washington from the inside out. the same line or very similar line was uttered by mitt romney when he ran for president the last time. what you do you think of this noex that they're looking for anything. you have a tape? i've got a tape. darn, my tape doesn't get traction. i'll look at a comment you made about the change in washington .

>> it's curious you would criticize obama for wanting to play the outsider role, when that's what mitt romney wanted to play. so your larger question about the message of the day is an interesting one. i mean, they really -- every campaign has to balance between responding, between pivoting very quickly when there's a newsworthy event and sticking to the larger strategy. what we've seen with the romney campaign is uncertainty about whether they want to be the larger message, as they did for so many weeks and months. even when other things seemed important to where we are today, which is it seems almost a different message every couple days. we haven't heard -- either you didn't build that since the convention when, of course, we thought that was the message going forward. we've had a couple different messages in the last few weeks. it seems they're attempting to be more nimble, but it raises the question of whether they're losing sight of the bigger picture. they, obviously, think this is working and they're doing it for a reason.

>> this is how they put it. referring to the romney campaign. they're stuck chasing news cycles. it's tough to get out of especially late in the campaign. we're late in the campaign, and there's a move by the romney group to release his tax returns . as danny pointed out as highlighted by the romney folks in the note they sent out. they want to let people know that the governor gave an incredible amount of money, $4 million, 30% of their income to charity, donations and charitable contributions are amazing and perhaps we should hope that we have enough cash to donate. the bottom line , he had a 14.1% effective tax rate . does the releasing of the information take some of the steam out of senator harry reid and other republicans who said he didn't pay any taxes at all?

>> absolutely not. this doesn't answer any questions, tamron . first of all, we haven't seen it. they're drip, dripping it out because they want you to tell the story about the 4 million, but they don't tell you the rest of the story that comes at 3:00. we don't know a lot of information about the 20 years. they give us a summary of 20 years. why not release the tax returns if they're that noxious? they're not willing to show the american people what they have a right to see. we don't know anything about the $101 million he has in his i.r.a., which it's impossible to accumulate that much money with the annual contribution limit or about his swiss bank account or the contributions in the cayman islands or the offshore accounts in the bermuda shell company . we don't know any information because romney is selective about the information he's releasing, and it will raise more questions than it answers.

>> let me bring you back in, danny , regarding this comment made by ann romney . i want to read what peggy noonan wrote in the " wall street journal ." she said the romney campaign has to get turned around. this week i called it incompetent, but only because i was being polite. i really meant rolling calamity. let me play what ann romney said in the radio interview where she took it to some of the conservatives in the party.

>> stop it. this is hard. you want to try it? get in the ring. this is hard, and, you know, it's an important thing that we're doing right now, and it's an important election. it is time for all americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with mitt's qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country.

>> so, danny , you mentioned that you were one of the ones that criticized the governor for not releasing those tax returns . ann romney says stop it to you. is that harsh, or is she right on the money here? not to you personally, but to obviously all the republicans out there? she was very strong. stop it. you could tell she raised boys for sure.

>> that's true. that's a good point. all of us on the republican side that really want to see mitt romney in the white house , our message to the campaign frankly and my message is, the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. we have to focus on jobs and the economy. i care much less about mitt romney 's tax returns over the last 20 years than president obama 's record over the last three and a half americans . we have 1 in 6 americans living in poverty right now. 40 million americans receive food stamps right now. we have 43 straight months of unemployment of over 8%. obama 's record is one of disappointment at the best and failure at worst. we have to focus on being able to turn around the economy. there's one person running for president right now who has a record of working on both sides of aisle to get things done and move the process forward. working whether it's inside washington or outside washington , because you have to do both to change washington . only one person has been able to achieve that, and that's mitt romney .

>> he doesn't talk about his own state. he was a governor in the state that ranked 45th for job creation . he doesn't talk about all the issues about his own state, because he's aafraid of his record. he's afraid of romney care. he's afraid of the connection to health care . he doesn't want to talk about it.

>> he's no longer afraid of romney care, because he says that's a compliment that he's considered the grandfather of quote-unquote obama care. at least that is undecided. nevertheless, i want to talk about real quick with you ann romney 's tone and stop it she said it in a very scolding way. she also said that people should be lucky that someone with governor romney 's experience, her husband's experience, would be on the forefront of this race for his party. what are we seeing in her reaction and even in her tone in that interview?

>> look, it's no surprise that a spouse would at this juncture, given the week mitt romney has had, be very frustrated with the coverage and critics and want to lash out a little bit. asking critics to stop it, i don't know if that's a effective strategy. i think it opens you up to criticism about not being able to take the heat. certainly given the performance, the very sunny, cheerful, optimistic performance she had at the republican convention , i would have to assume that that would be the image that they would prefer to be the lasting one. it's no surprise. she's only human, and quite frankly she's showing who she really is. i think that's part of her appeal, too.

>> she's seeing the toll it's taking on her husband as the nominee. no nonetheless if you can't take the heat, urn the saying. thank you all of you. have a great weekend.

Documenting women's experiences with chromosome abnormalities found in new prenatal test

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? We often hear that "knowledge is power." But, that isn't always the case, especially when the knowledge pertains to the health of an unborn child, with murky implications, at best. A new study, led by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, begins to document this exception to the general rule.

Barbara Bernhardt, MS, CGC,a genetic counselor at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues contacted a small group of women who are participating in a larger Columbia University study investigating the use of a genetic test called a DNA microarray to identify the possibility of prenatal chromosomal abnormalities. Bernhardt is also co-director of the Penn Center for the Integration of Genetic Healthcare Technologies.

The study's goal: To document a woman's experience upon learning that her child's genetic material contained chromosomal abnormalities. The women's responses to this type of news were mostly negative, ranging from saying they "needed support" after getting the results to describing the results as "toxic knowledge," that they wish they hadn't received.

DNA microarrays represent a relatively new approach to genetic testing. Classically, chromosomal abnormalities are detected with karyotyping, which uses DNA staining and microscopy to identify such large-scale abnormalities as trisomy 21, associated with Down's syndrome. Yet the technique lacks the resolution to detect smaller -- yet still significant -- chromosomal changes.

That's where DNA microarrays come in. Microarrays use an array of DNA "probes" to search for matching bits of DNA from across the genome. In theory, if a piece of DNA is missing or duplicated, that change can be detected on a microarray, even if it is too small to be detected by karyotyping.

DNA microarrays are often used by physicians following birth to identify chromosomal abnormalities in children with unexplained developmental delays or congenital defects. However, the technique is also being applied prenatally. The problem, though, unlike some genetic changes that definitely lead to disease, is that the significance of the changes DNA microarrays identify (called copy-number variants) isn't always clear. Nor is it necessarily obvious what actions parents, doctors, and genetic counselors should take in light of the findings.

Bernhardt set out to document the experiences of women receiving such information. Of the 4,450 women enrolled in the Columbia University trial, Bernhardt and her team selected 54 who had received chromosome microarray results that showed abnormalities in the previous six months. Of those, they interviewed 23 regarding the subjects' recollections of their informed-consent discussions, genetic counseling, test results, and follow-up.

The team identified five "key elements" that describe the women's experiences:

  • "An offer too good to pass up." Many of the women accepted the offer for testing because it was offered at no cost and posed no additional risk to them or their unborn child. Yet they did so without necessarily considering the potential significance and ambiguity of the information they could receive.
  • "Blindsided by the results." Women reported being caught off-guard by the microarray data, which generally arrived one to two weeks after preliminary (and seemingly normal) karyotype information.
  • "Uncertainty and unquantifiable risks." Women had difficulty making sense of the test results, as copy-number variants are often of either uncertain clinical significance, or produce a wide array of possible developmental outcomes. As a result, the women's time-critical and emotionally charged decisions about whether to terminate a pregnancy, for instance, were complicated.
  • "Need for support." The women reported needing support from counselors, spouses or partners to digest and consider the information they had received and to make critical decisions regarding their pregnancies.
  • "Toxic knowledge." The women noted that in many cases the array results constituted "toxic knowledge" that they, in retrospect, wish they hadn't learned, because it negatively impacted their pregnancy, birth, and postnatal experiences. As Bernhardt describes it, "They watch their babies like hawks, ? always waiting for the other shoe to drop."

According to Bernhardt, chromosomal microarrays pose the same ambiguities after birth as prenatally. The difference is that postnatal testing is done because the child already exhibits an unexplained abnormality, and physicians hope the test can pinpoint its cause. "But when you find [an abnormality] in a fetus it puts the woman and couple into a tailspin because they have no clue what to expect," she says. "And the couple is immediately faced with whether or not to terminate the pregnancy."

The take-home message, Bernhardt says, is that genetic counselors must be prepared to spend more time with parents to help them explore their reasons for wanting microarray testing. Counselors also need to emphasize to parents the potentially ambiguous nature of the microarray results, how to consider potential responses, and how to make the best decisions they can based on both available scientific data and the clients' beliefs.

The study, "Women's experiences receiving abnormal prenatal chromosomal microarray testing results," was published online September 6 in the journal Genetics in Medicine.
